So I am exiting graduate school shortly, and I my husband and I need to make some decisions on where to look for work. My research needs dictate I should be looking for a place that has a fairly large, active population of black progressive types.

And no, I don't mean people who vote democrat. I'm not talking about the largely Christian, Upwardly Mobile, Black Greek, Credit to My Race population Atlanta is known for. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm looking more for the grassroots activist types, the type of people who don't eat pork and quote The Last Poets a lot. LOL. Okay, I'm being a little facetious, but if you get the joke you know what I mean.

Anyway, as many times as I've been to Atlanta I've never been aware of a lot of the latter being there. I'm sure there are some, but where are they, and are they few and far between? Does anyone here know? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

We have a black activist in the White House now. Look at how well that's going over.

ACORN types need not apply.

Yeah, uh, that didn't even come close to answering the question, but thanks anyway I guess?

These types can be found all around. Just visiting you will probably not notice it though as the hustle and bustle of the professional class overshadows them. If you are looking for a hang spot for like minded individuals check up the Shrine of the Black Madonna Cultural center in the West End and Apache Cafe in Midtown...just to name a few.

In simplest of terms the reply had nothing to do with the OP's question, and to think that it did is the reason for the fail. The OP's post was taken out of context to steer the thread in a different direction. I don't know whether it was because of lack of insight or mal intent, but you decided to bring out your pom poms . That's why you get a double fail.

In any event, the OP's question was answered. No need for this to be hijacked with the back and forth "off topic" antics so common here.

Welp, small world. I grew up in that type of activist household the OP speaks of in Atlanta, and with the Shrine being my home church was gonna suggest she attend service there (many ppl don't know the bookstore is owned by the church next door)

In fact, that area where the church is (West End) has a pretty high concentration of progressive types. The bookstore has fliers of grassroots events, and talk to the manager (her name is Ewa) about other places to visit.

First Afrikan church in Decatur is also progressive, with some members of the Shrine having moved there, and many of its members are a part of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, which I grew up in as well. MXGM holds a popular annual cultural festival and parade in May (in honor of X's birthday) in the West End Park.

Also, the radio station 89.3 is progressive and lets you know of African-centered, political events in the city.

While the traditional Greek life type of Black folk is prevalent here, my family has fared just fine finding a community closer to our values, and I love the A for its diverse offerings for various black communities.

Thank you to everyone who actually answered the question!

So now, if we do end up in Atlanta I know where I need to go to find people to interview and projects to base a case study around. Thanks again!
