San Jose's Downtown

Atlanta's Downtown

San Jose: Capital of Silicon Valley

Atlanta: Capital of the entire Southeastern United States

San Jose Airport: 213,197 Aircraft Operations and 5,283,407 passengers

Atlanta Airport: 970,235 Aircraft Operations and 88,032,086 passengers

San Jose: A secondary component of the San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan area and the 31st largest metro area in the country on its own

Atlanta: the 9th largest metro area in the country and bigger than the San Francisco-Oakland metro area (12th largest) to which San Jose is secondary

San Jose's Wikipedia description of its downtown:

"There has been broad criticism over the past few decades of the city's architecture.Citizens have complained that San Jose is lacking in aesthetically pleasing architectural styles. Blame for this lack of architectural "beauty" can be assigned to the re-development of the downtown area from the 1950s onward, in which whole blocks of historic commercial and residential structures were demolished."

Atlanta's Wikipedia description of its downtown:

"Atlanta's skyline is punctuated with highrise and midrise buildings of modern and postmodern vintage. Its tallest landmark—the Bank of America Plaza—is the 42nd-tallest building in the world at 1,023 feet (312 m). It is also the tallest building in the United States outside of Chicago and New York City and the tallest building in any U.S. state capital."

"Unlike many other Southern cities such as Savannah, Charleston, Wilmington, and New Orleans, Atlanta chose not to retain its historic Old South architectural characteristics. Instead, Atlanta viewed itself as the leading city of a progressive "New South" and opted for expressive modern structures. Atlanta's skyline includes works by most major U.S. firms and some of the more prominent architects of the 20th century, including Michael Graves, Richard Meier, Marcel Breuer, Renzo Piano, *****rd Chilton, and locally based internationally known Mack Scogin and Merrill Elam Architects."

So congratulations, San Jose tore down its old downtown and replaced it with a suburban office park. Atlanta replaced its old southern downtown with a global metropolis. I wonder who got the better deal?

'Do You Know the Way to San Jose?' Forget it!

Even Dionne Warwick wouldn't waste her time driving to a city with such a pathetic-looking downtown skyline.

Look at the pictures of the two downtown skylines. The difference is like night and day.

Even Petula Clark votes for 'Downtown' Atlanta.

What is the point of this rating? Doesnt make the situation in Atlanta any better or worse. Another useless piece of reporting.

Why should a larger city equal more crime in a per capita sense? If anything, cities can amortize the costs to help prevent crime (e.g., units specializing in gangs, meth, etc.). Meth in particular has generated enormous amounts of crime in some small cities that are not equipped to handle such problems.

It's a list. People like lists. It's all about eyeballs, remember?

Is Atlanta not the biggest city on the list?

The absence of other large city names stuck out to me.

Being the largest or one of the largest on the list with a bad score is nothing to be proud of.

Washington DC?

And something to be proud of is we went down 7 spots in the ranking to 25... so if we continue dropping we won't be in the top 25 in 2011, at least according to that website.
