The TV stations are the only ones who get anything done in Atlanta, a city plagued with complacency, indifference, and laziness.

The traffic signal at the Piedmont Ave/North Ave intersection has 3 huge rolls of extra cabling/telephone lines, etc. dangling sloppily overhead FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR NOW.

Why can't the Public Works dept. in this city take more pride in their work? NO OTHER CITY in America has as many crooked, leaning, missing and faded street signs and road signs as Atlanta. Primitive and ugly.

It's been many years but I remember Channel 11 used to come up with any excuse to use their helicopter to report on a story. Even if the helicopter offered nothing to help the story. It would be cut to pilot in helicopter, he introduces the story, go to film clip of story, back to helicopter pilot. Channel 11 would even cut to the helicopter to assure us that it is flying and should any breaking story happen during the news it would be ready! I wonder how much fuel they wasted on that gimmick? And are they still flying it? The most it could do is show a traffic jam, crash or fire from on high. Absolutely of no use to us in terms of information.

Naw, they got rid of Skycam a couple years back. They work with FOX5/SkyFox5 for their chopper video now.

Actually wasn't 11-Alive's "eye in the sky" roving reporter Bruce Erion killed in a tragic (and somewhat suspicious) boating accident on Lake Lanier a few years back? That brought an end to their Skycam gimmick. He was never replaced.

Aside from traffic reports, nobody in the country uses helicopters anymore. The liability insurance is FAR too expensive.

I don't know about that one. Have you looked at LA lately? Some of the stations have 2 or 3 choppers .

I'm sorta surprised that the choppers weren't used more compared to other cities before the fuel prices went up. Even now, their use is spradoic at best. Channel 2 uses Chopper 2 the most with FOX5 coming up the rear. 46 seems to be rarely in the air anymore.

Besides WSB, neither 5 or 46 uses their chopper in the morning. 5 has a deal with one of the traffic companies (Metro?) that has a white/red chopper with a camera on it in the morning, when an incident occurs for video.

FWIW, according to live apartment fire blog, Bruce flies for LifeFlight now...

Bruce wasn't killed...it was his girlfriend that died. Bruce left 11 Alive and was replaced by Kurt Kalbach who also later left and both were flying for Life Flight
