Talk about sticker shock----I just got back from a routine visit to the dentist. A cleaning by the hygienist and an exam from the dentist. Half an hour for the cleaning, one minute for the exam. No X-Rays.

$140! I forget what they used to charge, but this seems really excessive.

Dentist is in John's Creek---so possibly a little more expensive than some other areas, but still.

What do y'all pay?

Runs from $105 to $150 on average depending on the dentist, location of office, etc. etc.

We paid just under $100.00 until we signed up for Vital Access through Aetna. Anybody can join, there is no waiting period, and we save 50% on all dental procedures. Well worth the $125 for a family of 5 per year.

My dentist charges $84.00 for Prophylaxis. I end up paying most of it because he is 'out of network' but after hunting for a dentist who is on this side of honest, I'll keep going.

$40. I don't know, if its because they already got paid from the other two or not.

Thanks, all, for your replies. I guess it's just the going rate----just came as a shock to me (maybe because I am feeling poor after having to buy a new computer!).

$78 for the cleaning, $45 for the exam. You are in sticker shock? Check how much just a maytag repairman's housecall is, even if he finds nothing wrong with your appliance.

Had a 6 mo. dental check up yesterday in Alpharetta. $96 for the cleaning, $50 for the oral evaluation and $68 for 4 bitewing x-rays. Total $214. Seems a bit high, but he is good and probably honest.

If you are paying in CASH (Check/CC/Debit) Ask the dentist for a CASH discount. My Dentist discount me about 40% off the 'full' rate he sends to the Ins company. (the Ins Company get a 40/50% discount off his 'full' rate) so by asking for the cash discount most will give you since they dont have to do any paperwork, or wait weeks for Ins company to pay them/
