I'm a little worried, though. Last 50K I ran was in middle of April and the temps were perfect. It's so much warmer. I did 20 miles last weekend in the heat and it was okay. But that's 12 miles less than I'm doing tomorrow...will be finishing later in the day, 1-2pm...

Hopefully the shade will help keep things tolerable.
Whoa.. for a second there I thought you made a typo and that should have been 5K, but I was wrong. 32 miles is A LOT for this kind of heat. Be safe and best of luck!

I'll be down at the Ritz with my suit on running the front drive like I usually do. Not looking forward to that icky feeling when the humidity makes you feel dirty.

High temperatures in Athens for the first three days of June: 99, 98, 97.

By the way, it's a relatively dry heat because Georgia has been dry this year. With normal rainfall, the temperatures would probably be slightly lower, but heat indices would be higher.

I predict there will be a lot more walking than planned. I will stop if it gets too hot. My ego isn't so big I'll risk dying over something silly like recreation.

If you're going to be in a heavy suit, that's more like livery, you're going to be pretty hot yourself. Keep some water nearby!

If you haven't had to change your soaked underwear after coming home it's not hot yet.. When you sweat your draws off then it's officially hot..

So, I finished my 50K. It was hot but it was actually not all that bad until the last 10 miles. I was running with a guy who got heat sickness during that last 9, so I walked just about an entire 5.5 mile loop with him and he called it quits. He was all pale and nauseated. It was a good call. I stayed with him for about 30 minutes until his wife showed up. Then I finished out the last 3.5 at a pretty good pace, < 30min. So, all in all, with walking that 5.5 miles and waiting around it took up 9 hours. My last 50K took me 7:49. I think if my friend wouldn't have had heat sickness we would have done it in about 7.

And take this into consideration, this guy got heat sickness despite carrying a camelbak of powerade and a hydration belt with water in it, and downing GUs, etc. I don't know why he was afflicted and I wasn't. We seemed to be at approximately the same fitness level. He's done more 50Ks than I have.

I think it's a combination of factors, not all you can control for. So it seems your best bet is to call it a day when things are going bad. It's never worth dying over.

The GREAT thing about running ultras is that it's not about how fast but about how far. And their easer to attain than you'd think. It's all about training and anyone with two good legs and heart can do it. It's so not elitist. At any ultra it's a rag tag bunch, and usually a lot of beer.
