Im thinking about moving from San Diego to either relocate or visit and find a cheaper place to live. My concern being sans car, i will be strapped to Downtown area i would think. I can handle the high crime areas (Oakland), so my target rent range can fall to $500 or less. Counties close to downtown (biking range) can be considered. Is there a section of town where i can find this?

By you saying "Downtown" I guess you mean Central Atlanta as Downtown is just a single district and far from the one place one could live car free. With that said, if you work or live within about 10 blocks or less of a train station (and/or along a frequent route for either or both) in the city of Atlanta and central Dekalb then you will be good.

I think its your best interest to try to find a place outside of Downtown, its not a very nice downtown. Especially at night. I would probably look for a place in midtown maybe?

Downtown is not perfect, and it can be rough for people not used to living in an urban enviroment, but one of it's biggest problems are simply fraidy cats.

Thanks for that, i thought it looked too spread out, when i went on google maps streetview. I'm looking for a large metro with alot of old 5 or 6 story cheap monthly hotels, like Chicago, maybe. Ill rethink my destination now. Thanks again.

I know, It's like people have a heart attack every time they see a bum, and god forbid the bum ask for money then it becomes the crime of the freakin' century.

Just say no and they go away.

When I lived Downtown the bums weren't the problem for me. After a while they get to know you from seeing you everyday and know that bumming for change won't work so they don't even waste their time. Hell, I became very friendly with a few homeless guys and helped them out with food and getting into shelters and such. Really nice guys just down on their luck.

The real problem though: Tourists. Always asking where something is. Always getting lost. Always trashing the neighborhood.

Its kind of sad since the city has signs all over dowtown with directions to the major tourist atractions.

any part of town really but the highest concentration is around woodruff park. Most of them are just bums that like to sit and do nothing but a few of them will try to solicit you, just say no and they go away
