Georgia is one of the original 13 colonies, however, Atlanta was not founded until the mid 19th century. Atlanta does not have that old world colonial legacy that other eastern cities have (e.g. Savannah, St. Augustine, Charleston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Pittsburgh, etc).
1837, to be exact.

Interesting that you chose Pittsburgh as a peer city to those with an 'old world, colonial legacy'. I don't see it at all. True that its founding predates Atlanta's by about 80 years (as a military installation); however, it would appear to have more in common with Atlanta than with the others you cite.

- Both were established for specific strategic purposes by virtue of their locations; Pittsburgh as a beachhead against the French and Native Americans as well as a facilitator for western expansion and trade, Atlanta as a hub for rail travel to the west and east.

- Both are 'inland' cities (unlike the others), situated in the foothills of Appalachian mountain ranges.

- Both were 'outlier' settlements in their inception, considered coarse and rough & tumble by their eastern cousins. Philadelphia had Pittsburgh to belittle, Savannah had Atlanta.
