Interesting factoid: more than $775 million in new private development has taken place within one-half mile of this Beltline section in the last seven years.

I've been kind of intrigued over the last few months at how Atlantans just kind of took ownership of the trail, ignoring warning signs, orange pylons, and little strips of tape. That kind of enthusiasm probably keeps project officials and Beltline attorneys up at night, but it's a sign that people were ready for this Beltline segment to open last week.

I just thought I would use this as a quick reminder to most people how most of what has been built has been funded through a TAD.

It is the extra property tax revenue generated from $775 million + increase in property value over 30 years funding the improvements.

The city coffers doesn't lose money, but also doesn't gain the extra revenue until the TAD expires.

I took the tour about a year ago. It was a lot of fun and very informative. I would definitely recommend others to sign up for it.

Yeah, I often need to get from Inman Park to Piedmont Park. And the race was to follow the Beltline.

Some great restaurants along the BeltLine in Inman Park, all the Kevin Rathburn's.
Still with the BeltLine being grade separated from major roads, it allowed the runner to beat the driver.

My commute from Glenwood Park to Virginia Highlands is easily faster by bike the Beltline than by car. It's such an easy trip I can bang out the morning email flurry on my phone while riding hands-free.

But do you think there is any chance that it would be approved today if we were debating it's initial construction, in this climate of Republican extremism against any taxes or infrastructure spending, with it's construction cost of over $400 billion? Not a chance.

The interstate highway system was approved by Eisenhower, a Republican, but then Republicans in the 50s didn't really have a problem with infrastructure spending, or with taxes to support it for that matter. The top tax rate was 90% in the 50s. Today Republican leaders do not feel our crumbling infrastructure is a problem, they feel that the main problem with our country is the tax rate on the wealthy is too high at 35% and needs to be lowered further.
