I'm moving to Atlanta and I don't know a single person. I was thinking about getting a roommate to hopefully get to know the city a bit for it's always hit or miss with people off craigslist. Does anyone have a recommended site for finding a roommate? I also thought I could live alone and just meet people throughout going out and being social.

I was wondering if people feel like it's easy to meet people out or if you think it is a good idea to get a roommate? I'll be 27 in August and I'm a dude.

The whole room mate thing is for people who are trying to cut expenses I think. I'm moving to Atlanta in the next couple of weeks too. I'm also a guy, but 19. I have a job in Buckhead and will be living in Midtown. Where are you coming from?

No matter what, a roommate situation entails a bit of trust. It's tough to do with someone you don't know at all.

What I did when I moved to Atlanta was got my own place. Then when my lease expired, I roomed with a guy who I knew from work. It's always good to room with someone who you know has a steady job (to avoid those sob stories of "sorry, man, I'm short on rent this month" or BS like "I don't use much electricity, so I shouldn't have to pay half the power bill).

You'll be amazed how much having a roommate cuts expenses, and it can be really fun if you find the right person.

I don't know if any websites that specialize in matching roommates would do any better than craigslist. My wife's best friend did that when she first moved to Atlanta 5 years ago and the woman she lived with stole her insurance information to use it to buy prescription medication to help make meth...

Those are some pretty crazy stories! I'm moving from Los Angeles and I'll be working in Sandy Springs. Been searching for a place in Midtown. I think the posts have convinced me to go it alone. I think I'll be able to meet people outside of my house. Any other experiences?

The only other site that comes to mind is roomster.com.

Typically the reason for getting a roommate is to save money if you're on a very tight budget - or if on Craigs List, they look for other things sometimes. Pass.

Short: If you can afford to live alone, then do live alone. There are countless social clubs, night clubs, and other outlets in the area where you can meet people and still be able to come home at night knowing that someone didn't eat your food or do the nasty with their girlfriend on your new sofa while you were out.

Yeah, coming all the way from LA I'd try to go it alone at first -- especially if money isn't the issue. Once you're here in Georgia, you should find it VERY easy to make friends, depending on your interests. After that, who knows?! Wife + babies!

If you do decide to get a roommate when you first come here, go to the Georgia Tech campus and look at bulletin boards.

A GA Tech kid would be less likely to ********* over than the general public.
