I like this idea alot. It will make up for the completely under designed 17th St bridge.

Also have to love that the money for this comes from advertising on highway signs. NICE.

While we're at it, lets allow the states to decide on lane widths, striping, etc- I'm sure some state would love to have pink lines that undulate back and forth!

Hell, let's go really crazy and have some states switch it up and have drivers driving on the left side of the road instead of the right! Now that would be fun.....
Eh...your attempt at reductio ad absurdum doesn't work. I'd welcome variety between states and I'm sure they won't go to the extreme of making it really difficult for out-of-state drivers to navigate their highway system.

well, part of the problem (if you want to call it that) of homogenous signage and infrastructure in georgia is the DOT here— they mandate the types of signs used, lighting, bridge construction, etc. i was in alabama yesterday and i was noticing how varied everything was on the DOT controlled highways— for example they have concrete and metal bridges over there instead of just metal like we do, the type of lighting varies pretty drastically between different towns, some signs are reflective, some aren't, etc. georgia is a more progressive state and we apportion more funding towards the DOT so maybe that's the issue. honestly i wish the DOT wasn't so stringent about some things. street lighting, for example— here it's impossible to find a road lit with anything other than sodium vapour lights, the blinding orange scourge of the night, over in montgomery on the residential streets they use a soothing white light that lights the streets just as well but is not as bright and glaring.

I like this design as it will announce to visitors the location of Atlanta's most popular and main street. It will also enhance the walking pleasure of the bridge as it separates peds from the road.
