Compared to California, everything is going to be cheaper !!! Real Estate taxes typically run around 1.2% - 1.5% of market value. Sales taxes are mostly 7%. I know this city very well, what is price range because this is a large city with lots of different options.

I hear nurses are in very high demand in Atlanta !!

Cobb county is hard to beat when it comes to schools. Look into Walton, Lassiter and Pope Highs to give you an idea. I agree with Radley on the taxes, although property taxes can come in as low as 1% of value as long as you file for Homestead.

If proximity to hospitals is important than you might want to consider North Fulton or Sandy Springs as well. These are some of the pricest areas outside the perimeter of Atlanta to live, but there is a major center of hospitals located in this area. Then again, coming from CA, you will find that just about anywhere in the Metro area is going to look like a value. Our median home price is right around $225K, but in this area I would venture to guess it was closer to $325K without pulling the numbers.

I can't speak to Charlotte other than to tell you I have an aunt that sells real estate there and see tells me that home values are still rather good, similar to what we are seeing here in metro Atlanta. As far as nursing goes, I would assume that you would just about be garuanteed a job as there is in fact a very high demand for qualified nurses. My wife is beginning her education for a nursing degree at KSU and we have several friends that are currently in that field.

I hope that helps.
