I've looked on other sites and found horrible reviews on stone mountain. Is it true it is for really poor blacks, school systems are terrible, its run down, and crime rate is high? Im interested in a particular subdivision that Im looking at in the area. What areas are good in the area?

From what I've seen, that's all pretty much true.

But I do know one person who lives there who likes it okay...of course he doesn't have any kids!

I've always heard there is a tiny portion of Stone Mountain that is still okay, but I'm not sure where exactly it is.

Yea it's not really desirable. Are you looking to move there? Or are you just curious?

If that is the case, that is awful. Stone Mountain used to be a really great community.

Well, let's put it like this: Stone Mountain is not usually one of the first places that potential newcomers are told to look when considering a move to the Atlanta area.

With that said, just like Stone Mountain has its not-so-nice areas (particularly the areas along Memorial Drive, and Hairston Road above Memorial), Stone Mountain also has some areas that are okay to somewhat nice (the Southland Country Club area, the area that feeds into Stephenson High School is okay, Stone Mountain Village is okay, and there are also some okay areas on the Gwinnett County side of Stone Mountain as well).

But truth be said, Stone Mountain is not necessarily the first place that potential newcomers are going to be directed or encouraged to look at because of the ongoing governing issues in DeKalb County and because of the area's continuing transition from an area that was once outer-suburban to one that is more urban in nature.

If I may ask, what is the subdivision that you are looking at in the Stone Mountain area?

Stone Mountain and un-incorporated Stone Mountain covers a very large area. There are some great older established communities, a few affluent communities, and some pretty hood areas. The areas around N. Hairston near Memorial are pretty bad but Historic Downtown Stone Mountain is pretty cool.

The Gwinnett portion of Stone Mountain is pretty nice and some of the areas immediately around Stone Mtn park are very nice. The entire Stone Mountain area (the city and un-icorporated areas) is probably 80% Black but I would not equate that to mean all ghetto even though there are some really run down areas you should avoid.

My apartment was shot into when I lived in Stone Mountain. Some of the subdivisions are still nice, but the nearby apartment complexes are rough. I think you can manmage the subdivsions if you don't have kids to send to the schools, which are bad. Perhaps try looking near Stone Mountain Village.

There is crime there. Stone Mountain started going down a year after we moved there in the late 90's.

Stone Mountain used to be a hot suburb but then it went down. As Atlanta_BD said they have some good SFH neighborhoods, but some of the apt. complexes are problematic.

It is a kind of sad place because back in the 80's it was a desirable area.

I have seen SFHs sell for less than they did over 25 years ago in Stone Mountain.

This about sums it up. The village area is nice. I was going to buy a home in the Safari Woods subdivision. Some friends live there and I like it. Another friend of mine lives in Les Chateaux and her subdivision is nice as well.
