Wow, I've been busy and clearly out of the loop. for awhile..

So Delta is flying to both direct?

They don't need to do CPT stop to fly from JNB with this aircraft arrangement?

Just wanted to follow up on this a small bit.

It isn't a snub or have much to do with the fact that Atlanta is a hub or not.

The issue is Emirates doesn't have an airline partner in ATL, so to operate a flight here it depends purely on O&D traffic from ATL and can't rely on connections much.

The fact that Turkish Airlines and Qatar has a good presence here brings them significant competition. I'd also note that many of the markets that fliers might connect through Dubai for may also overlap with Korean Air connections through Seoul, Connections through China Eastern, Connections through Europe via British Airways, Lufthansa, and KLM/Air France.

They also had a gate scheduling problem for access to gates that can take an A380, which limited when and if they could fly an A380 here that limited them to using their B777 fleet. I'm not sure how much this impacted their metrics. A380s are more fuel efficient, but the plane really needs to be full consistently, which makes their B777 fleet more flexible, so it is possible they didn't want to alter their B777 schedule to give service to ATL or it would be more costly to fly a B777 to Atlanta (per passenger carried).

They will be accepting more B777 deliveries in the mid to late 2020's, which might cause them to enter more markets.

They fly both direct I believe with a weirdly complicated 10-flight per week arrangement. I think CPT is 3x weekly and JNB 7x, and the 4x CPT doesn’t fly, JNB returns via CPT. The other times, JNB returns direct (sometimes weight restricted).

I flew nonstop to CPT in March and man, that was a great flight. Unlike flying to Europe it’s long enough to get a full night of sleep, and you land in the afternoon, so you can just check into your hotel, have dinner, and go to sleep. Night and day better than a double-overnight itinerary through Europe. Literally adds a day to your trip.

Rumor has it that Delta and Airbus will be announcing the order of 20 A350-1000 on Friday. If so, this would be an excellent addition to Delta's fleet.

SAS will fly a daily A330 from Copenhagen to Atlanta in the summer, and 5x weekly A350 in the winter.

The airport handled 104,653,451 passengers last year, which is the third busiest year on record. For international traffic, I believe it was the busiest year on record.

Awesome! Hopefully, we can attract Air India or Emirates to start service from ATL soon.
