OP, how old is your daughter who is gender non-conforming? Are we talking high school, junior high or elementary school? This might help with identifying specific schools of interest.
To answer your question, she is 8 and just started 3rd grade. She still just trying to figure things out and is by no means 100% confident and/or self-assured. This is the major cause of the anxiety attacks I have when considering a move.
Thanks for all the info, everyone! It's really helpful. Another big question is whether or not I'll have to work (I currently work full-time in advertising sales and the majority of my job is driving around and seeing advertisers). If I get a similar job in Atlanta (with Atlanta Magazine or something like that), I will also need to be thinking about the horrendous traffic problem. If I'm able to stay home for a while and not work (still no info on the kind of money he'll be making), then my environment will be all the more important. There's a big difference between working all day and then getting home with just enough time to make dinner and get the kids to bed and NOT having a job and needing to find moms/play dates for the 3 (almost 4) yr old. Ideally, there would be like-minded people close-by to come over for coffee (or a glass of wine, as the case may be).
My husband doesn't really mind driving but if his hours are massively insane and then he's adding major time to that on the road, that would most definitely suck A**!

Maybe someone in this group can help with information.
Thanks so much for this! Although I know the transition would be really hard if we decided to move, I can only imagine that there would be more resources for us in Atlanta as compared to the resources in a smaller area (Raleigh/Durham).

Reading through this, I'm actually going to vote for the Duluth/Alpharetta area. Whereas the area isn't urban, it isn't the country either. The people who live there are predominantly city people with city attitudes. I think you are going to be met with openmindedness in the area, both for race and gender conformity. Decatur would be ideal, but seemingly out of your price range and out of the way geographically for your husband's work. There will be plenty of cultural activities and the like in Alpharetta, if you seek them out. I'd say check out areas closest to his work first.

Then maybe, if you really don't click with the feel of Duluth/Alpharetta, drive down to Ashford Park/Chamblee. At least husband will just have a straight drive north to work. . .

Draw a circle say 10 miles from where you are going to work and then see what's within that range. From any point in Alpharetta, I'm sure you will find a nice home, great schools, lots of new friends for you and your kids. And, not far from some very good restaurants and more to come at the Avalon complex off of 400.
