Hi Everyone,

I grew up in CA where I never really saw a cockroach. Then I saw two huge ones in VA. What is the cockroach situation in Suwanee which is where we may be living.

We don't mind have a regular bug exterminator come out.

Thanks for any info.

Alley

But, seriously, if I use a pest exterminator in Suwanne -- will that be enough?

We've only seen roaches in the part of VA by the ocean -- not further inland. So I'm wondering if that's the same for GA. . .?

It seems like the roaches are worse this year because of the rain. We had one week where we killed 1 or 2 a day before the exterminator came out. The exterminator will take care of most of them, but it is no guarantee that you won't see one every once in a while. In this part of the south they are everywhere.

One every once in awhile is fine. My worry is that I've heard if you see one, it means dozens more just aren't showing.

But if you say that the exterminator works, that helps me a lot.

Thank you!

They are everywhere, and really big and numerous this year. I put spray some pesticides I buy at Target in and around the house, and it takes care of most of them. Definitely expect, even with an exterminator, to see them every now and again though - it's just the way it is down here. Every time I walk outside at night, they are running across the sidewalks. They are BIG, and yes, some fly (Palmetto bugs!)

Actually, Suwanee is known as the Roach Capital of Georgia. Roaches the size of small dogs are not unusual here. Herds of these giant creepy pests have been stopping traffic at the busy McGinnis Ferry Road-Scales Road intersection lately. It is scary! Finally, the Gwinnett County Planning Committee is considering building Roach Lanes on the shoulders of both McGinnis Ferry and Scales Roads to alleviate the problem. There have been so many accidents because these roaches smashed on the roads and scurrying everywhere. The town of Suwanee will also hire an additional 10 giant roach removal specialists this year. We have got to do something! Please come and voice your concern at the town hall meeting on the subject this Friday at 6pm at the dumpster behind Applebee's on Gwinco Blvd. Let's take our city back!

You're going to see the Palmetto bugs outside (which are oversized flying cockroaches that like to hang around outside lights at night) but its extremely rare that you will ever see them indoors as Palmetto bugs only seem to like hanging (and flying) around outdoor lights at night.

As for roaches that you might see inside...

What really works well in lieu of an exterminator is to go to a store (Target, Wal-Mart, Publix, Kroger, Ingles, etc) and purchase a couple of boxes of roach baits (preferably a quality brand) and put them down everywhere around the inside of your home (particularly in your kitchen where your food sources are on kitchen counters, under the kitchen sinks but also almost everywhere else around your home...on floors, in closets, at the corners of rooms, in the garage, in the basement if you have one, etc).

After you put down those roach baits in everywhere imaginable and/or where you may think is necessary, it is most likely that you will not see anymore roaches inside of your home.

I know that this works because I've lived in both apartments and detached single-family homes and that's how I've kept roaches away without having to resort to an exterminator.

Definitely worth trying, particularly if you are the one who will have to pay for the exterminator.

It's also worth trying if you don't necessarily feel comfortable with chemicals being sprayed everywhere within your home (out of concern for pets, small children, etc).
