If more people cycled we would all be better off.
Agree completely. Fellow NYer you're talkin' to.

Understood. Nice to meet ya. I am surprised that not more people cycle to work in Atlanta, especially given its rush hour congestion.

The problem is too many people live outside the perimeter. I bike to work though as my job is about a mile away. Only time I drive is if it's going to rain.

Except, Georgia law specifically allows bicycles to be ridden two-abreast (but no more than two). 40-6-294c

The problem is people in the cars driving 60+ mph on a 35mph speed limit road.

I think that the relatively hilly terrain in Atlanta limits most casual bike riders from commuting. That, and the unsafe practices demonstrated by Atlanta motorists who have a total disregard for biker/pedestrian safety.

I would love to see this trend reversed. There needs to be a push for whenever a road is resurfaced, they add bike lanes wherever possible. I realize that this is not always cost effective or possible due to right of way limitations, but it should be considered when applicable.

Thank you for correcting me. Side-by-side riding should not be allowed, at least on single-lane roads.

Secondly, enforcing the law should be the focus too. In NYC for example, it used to be a free-for-all cyclists going through red lights. NYPD cracked down. A red violation on a bike now is $ 275 plus court fees, almost $ 350. Now you see riders stop at red lights.

From the 11 Alive link, this is the most telling revelation:

"[Most bikers] are nice guys, they're people, but once in awhile you'll get a guy that will ride in the middle of the road and flip you off," Syfan said. "This is to identify the guys that are not abiding by the rules."

Being in the middle of the lane is legal. A cyclist is probaly not going to flip off a driver unless the driver puts them in danger. This bill smacks of revenge against "uppity" cyclists who refuse to be bullied.

It won't surprise me at all if this garbage passes.
