AtlJan, I appreciate the suggestion of speaking to someone at Blue Heron Nature Reserve and will do. I never even noticed it as i guess I'd been kicking it to Chastain and past the smell. I would put good money down on you being able to smell the fragrance (lol) I'm mentioning after a test drive so please report back after your experiment.

there was a news segment/article from wsb recently, within the past month or so about a vent filter for the sewer overflow project that isn't functioning properly. i can't seem to find it now, but it noted that they were "bringing in an expert" from out of state to work on it.

i drive over it on the way to work and i've noticed it smelling for the longest time... always thought it was the creek itself. too bad they didn't separate the sewer from the creeks instead of building overflow tunnels.

Thanks for the info cabasse. I'll try to find the clip. I mean really something is definitely not right about that smell and should be examined.

I tried yesterday, didn't catch a whiff but was going pretty fast. Will try again today. I don't doubt yall at all! I used to live near a sewer treatment plant and each time I smelled it, I said, "Ahhh, that smell is the only reason I got this awesome house for as cheap as I did!" Not sure if this same logic holds for Buckhead, though... :-)

While I didn't find anything on WSB, I did find an article on the Northside Neighbor, Neighbor Newspapers - Column Creeks offered pungent reminder of progress

Here's a summary:
  1. The “pungent smell” has been around Nancy Creek and other areas since the late 80s.
  2. As a result, the City of Atlanta was sued for failing to maintain its sewer system in 1995.
  3. The sewage and stormwater runoff share pipes resulting in raw sewage flowing into the creeks.
  4. There's a $3 billion project to fix this which should be completed in 2014.

So in short, it is indeed what it smells like.

Interesting description lol. Around the area on Roswell Rd that I have now learned is Nancy Creek, I'd say it smells more like a skunk that crawled out of another skunk's behind.
