Anyways to the original poster: Downtown...do some of the attractions near Centennial Park...do Little 5 points....if you're into MLK and all of the Civil Rights history, then you can go to the MLK center area. I also suggest a walk on the Eastside Beltline and spend a little time in Piedmont Park. You can go to Atlantic Station for a little urban shopping and people watching.
If you think I suggested Chattanooga it's completely obvious you didn't read it.

It depends what your interests are....

For example, I always tell visitors a few things like:

Eat at Fat Matt's Rib Shack. Oh, sure, the trendies will tell you there is better barbecue, but those are the same people who stopped listening to Nirvana just because it got popular. I don't care what anybody says, Fat Matt's ribs are the best, and the national reputation is deserved. Everybody I take there loves it. Go, you won't be disappointed.

You want to see something you've never seen before and never will again? Then go to the Clermont Lounge. If being in an insane basement pub that feels like an old set piece from Twin Peaks is up your alley, then you'll be extra thrilled to know that Clermont Lounge is home to Atlanta's most....ummm, seasoned....adult dancers. Some are over 60 years old and local celebrities. Clermont is the truest "come as you are" pub in Atlanta. You're just as likely to sit next to a Wall Street millionaire in a tailored suit as you are a Hells Angel in ripped up leather. But everyone is very cool and you can ask the bartender to tell you about the old days when GG Allin lived in the hotel above and gave impromptu gigs at the bar.

Everyone forgets to mention the Sundial because it's so cliche. But it does offer the best views of the city from a rotating restaurant. Tell the people out front you are going up to eat or have drinks at the bar and they shouldn't charge you to ride the glass elevator to the top. Grab a drink or appetizer for a full round (takes about 45 minutes) so you can see the entire panorama.

I do like the suggestion of Arabia mountain. Stone Mountain is cool, but it's really just a big rock. Arabia mountain isn't as big, but it has all these weird pools and crazy lichens and fungi. It's otherworldly. If you shot with the right filters, you could pass off pictures of Arabia mountain as coming from another planet, it's a pretty wild place.

Amicalola Falls - the best waterfall the shortest distance away. Chattanooga is fun, but it takes 90 minutes to get there and will be crowded on the 4th. You can get to Amicalola in under 45 minutes from Sandy Springs and there are no lines. It's a neat waterfall.

Lake Lanier Islands waterpark isn't as well-knowns as White Water, but it isn't as crowded either. And it has bars! Overall cleaner and more manageable than White Water, this highly underrated park has plenty of slides, a wave pool, and in inflatable obstacle course in the lake which looks like it is for kids, but trust me....it's fun. You can also do the thing where you grab a cable and ride around on a knee board.

The Vortex is Atlanta's most famous burger, but if you want something just as good in an even seedier dive, check out The Earl. Atlanta's true rock and roll bar, there's always some kind of show happening in the back room and the service is always spot on. Great food in an interesting part of the city!

Lots to do, but it depends on who you are and what you are looking for.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions! I think we'll be pretty busy this trip!

After a little more research we found some deals and decided to stay downtown. We'll be near the Coca-Cola museum, around the Civic Center MARTA stop.

+1 to Sundail bar. It's the best cheap thrill in the city, and the bar is a great loophole to get in. For $20 you can have a round of drinks and see an amazing view. Go around 8-9PM this time of year--it's quite impressive during sunset as everything lights up.

Definitely Little 5 Points. Not just the business district--wander around Inman Park, the neighborhood due west of Little 5, for a few minutes. I'd recommend the Porter Beer Bar if you like pubs, but there are plenty of great options in the neighborhood.

And of course check out Midtown, Piedmont Park, and the Eastside Beltline trail.

Get the Uber app if you don't have it. UberX is by far the easiest way to get around intown, unless you're right on the MARTA line. For instance, Little Five Points to Downtown shouldn't run more than $10, and could be closer to $5.

DO NOT DRIVE to L5P if you rent a car. A good way is to get on MARTA blue line from GA State at Jesse Hill Jr Dr, head East on MARTA towards Inman Park. Get off and you'll be posed with the choice of Inman Park or Reynoldstown. Take the Inman direction. Head through a parking lot then you'll go through a big park. Walk right on Euclid Ave. Then go left on Moreland Avenue. Check out the Junkman's daughter and the Vortex, left on Moreland. Check out all of L5P. Then go back the way you came. Or, if you're a little adventurous, go the other way down Moreland and take Seaboard Ave back to the Reynoldstown entrance and wonder how you got back to the same station when you just walked so much.
