If you look at the park score Atlanta is actually ranked slightly higher than LA. However Atlanta is only 42 out of 60 and the score takes into account size by using % of park land of which Atlanta has 5.8% versus 20% of the city being Park land in New York city.

If we had parks 5 to 10 miles wide, they'd cover most of the city. Also, as someone else has mentioned, cities in the East tend to be smaller in size. With the exception of NYC and Jacksonville, every city in the east both big and small is usually around 100 square miles or less.

As others have mentioned though, the city itself is within close proximity to the types parks. Many of them are just a few miles out the city.

If you start at the southern trailhead, go straight after the bridge instead the main trail to the left that parallels the river. On the map it will be a fairly long trail that parallels the river from a distance, that is the one. You have to make left pretty soon into the trail, then stay straight to the top. Once you get to the top, go left and you may come across the best view ITP. Enjoy and keep it to yourself

Things in that same vein...

Cascade Spring Nature Preserve - just checked it out this weekend and was impressed. There were some decent elevation changes, some great huge trees, and a bunch of boulders scattered about. Recommended.

Constitution Lakes - not hilly but fun to explore. There is a ADA trail going in, but there is a cool trail to the side that has a bunch of doll heads on it. Creepy in an artsy type of way.

Sope Creek Mill Ruins - Been awhile but I do remember it being pretty decent. https://www.google.com/maps/place/38...01ed57298480c3

OH!, definitely check out Sweetwater Creek State Park. The main trail is cool with the ruins but the yellow trail across the river can be very challenging at parts. There was a helluva ascent at one point.

Check out that book I posted earlier, found all kinds of great stuff. lots of small parks hidden in neighborhoods but have great little trails.

You need to look at the state park system. GA has some beautiful state parks and many are in metro Atlanta.

The city itself is known to not have as many large parks as other larger cities and some smaller cities, but if you research you will find that the state of GA has some great natural parks with many varied features from coastal, to mountainous, to deep beautiful forests with waterfalls. All are within a few hours drive from Atlanta.

A couple of nice neighborhood parks for the north side, funded by development impact fees.

Quote:
The Atlanta City Council’s Finance/Executive Committee approved legislation June 14 that will fund the conversion of two city-owned Buckhead lots into fully equipped public parks—Lenox Park and Old Ivy Park—at a cost of $3 million.

The legislation goes to the full City Council for a vote June 19.

The funding will go towards soft costs associated with the conversions, and improvements such as accessible walking paths, green infrastructure, the installation of new amenities such as playgrounds, pavilions, plazas, bike racks, park benches, trash receptacles, security lighting and the addition of accessible parking spaces.

Those lots had been purchased previously by the city as part of an ongoing effort to expand the park and trail system in this underserved part of Buckhead. The acquisition and build-out dollars come from a trust fund developers pay into when conducting area projects.
