True, look at I-565 connecting Huntsville to I-65.

That would make it NOT work. The people who's houses were near the toll road wouldn't have access (and would have even more reason to oppose it) and it would lose most of its non-truck traffic.

It should be setup like a toll road with exits 2 to 5 miles apart instead of the city freeways with exits every mile, but it should not just be limited to other limited access highways.

Yeah but I565 spur from I65 is only 22 miles to hunsville al. I185 spur from I85 is 49 miles to columbus. I185 is still the worlds longest exit ramp to columbus. But I hope someday they can make good use of this piece of interstate and extend it northward and southward. So truckers and travelers traveling from chattanooga, knoxville, nashville heading to florida will be able to bypass the atlanta perimeter I285 all together and head straight down I185 toward columbus and southward toward florida. Truckers and travelers traveling threw atlanta have to deal with the I285 perimeter traffic and the I85 going threw downtown traffic is horrible. If they did ever extend I185 northward and southward this would make such a easy way to go.

Unless trucks have a local delivery inside I-285, they aren't allowed to be on the Downtown Connector - or any other freeway inside 285. That's why the Perimeter is always jammed with trucks.

I corrected myself on the downtown connecter I meant to say I85 traffic threw downtown. This is why they need to extend I185 from columbus northward and southward so truckers and travelers won't have to worry about dealing with the I285 perimeter at all and I85 threw downtown atlanta. Atlanta residents may not want to listen but if something is not done then atlanta infrastructure is going to crumble due to all the heavy travel traffic volume. And then ya'll are going to wish ya'll would have listened. If I185 from columbus was extended northward and southward this would make travel so much easy and would take some strain off of atlanta. Atlanta is overweight right now and overloaded with traffic.

First I had heard that. How would out of state truckers know that? I haven't seen any signs.

There are signs. Look again.

They also mention it on the electronic signs sometimes as well.

Yep. It's also very common knowledge in the trucking industry. Believe me, they all know about it.

JMatl and Mossberg are right.

All through trucks with more than 6 wheels are required to use the I-285 Perimeter when passing through the Atlanta area.

Here is a picture of the white signs instructing drivers of through trucks with more than 6 wheels to take the I-285 bypass when approaching Atlanta:

I wonder has GDOT explored non-tolled lane designation yet. Much like HOT/HOV lanes where the lane permits a certain kind of vehicle (ie high occupancy), why not create designated freight/commerce lanes throughout the state....
