We are nearing the end of our apartment lease and considering buying a house. We have some friends who have moved to the Westside recently and they love the area. Only catch is that we can't afford the $300k+ price tag of Dupont Commons, etc. We need to stay near or under $200k and are intrigued by the Riverside area. Here is some info relevant to our decision...
We work in Buckhead and Piedmont Hospital
Can't afford what we want intown - we already know about Morningside, VaHighlands, Kirkwood, Grant Park, etc. Anything to avoid the downtown connector and the side-street congestion around Emory.
We have a newborn...schools are somewhat important at this stage, but...
....Might only be considering for 5 year-period before moving elsewhere/renting a home out - will this area finally take-off (we know about the plans for the Publix in the Moore's Mill retail area)?
Thoughts on Riverside neighborhood? The Forest Acres Subdivision in/near Smyrna has had some recent listings as well, and it seems like a decent area...except that it might be a bit isolated.
Thanks again. All helpful information. Definitely want a commute within 30-40 minutes from Buckhead...and pretty sure we want to avoid 400 from Roswell.

Then the West/Northwest side of Atlanta or the Smyrna/Mableton area should meet your needs.
Affordable, nice neighborhoods/homes, decent-to-great commute, and good schools.
Smyrna resident here who commutes to BH (Piedmont and Ptree). If you can adjust your commute times, easily a 30 minute drive. Normal rush hour can take an hour. Just something to consider.

Agreed! I live right inside the perimeter on S Atlanta Rd and used to commute to the Lenox Mall area. I could usually get there in about 30 minutes if I left around 8:30am. But coming home would take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. The horrible part was it was very unpredictable.
They have been talking about the Moores Mill Publix for years. I thought I saw a new medical processing place in that plaza a few weeks ago. Have there been any movement on Publix or a developer actually agreeing to demolish the existing eyesore? The Wendy's remodel could be a good sign...

Unfortunately, I've got a set commute schedule...work from 8am-5 or 6pm. Still, would consider if it meant that we could 1) afford where we live and 2) enjoy it...especially on weekends - ha!
