Because I'm looking at rentals now, and I'm seeing $900+ in undesirable locations. And well over $1000 in the more desirable areas.
I was talking about one bedrooms. They start out in the $700s

Two bedrooms in good areas start at around $900 like you said

These are just the areas I'm familiar with.

I friend of mine used Promove and was looking for an apartment in the same prize range last year and he had plenty of choices

Thing is all the luxury high-rise apartments in Midtown and Buckhead are making the average prices higher

Everywhere is the world (including communist China) sees rents escalating at a faster pace in a few sought after areas and the increase is NOT evenly spread out. You have two choices: pay the premium, or find a cheaper alternative. Now the cheaper alternative may be less convenient, but that IS how the market works everywhere. Even in extremely socialistic environments, Hello, Central Paris, Copenhagen, Beijing, etc.

The problem is a question of supply and demand, specifically at the middle class level. If you are rich or poor/working class, there is no shortage of great places to rent and you get a lot of bang for your buck.

If you are college educated schlub working at an office at the middle income tier, good luck to you if you're going for a traditional rental. The condo sublet market though is still fairly reasonable, but there are a lot of folks taking advantage of the current market.

It's just because everyone thinks they are entitled to live in the lap of luxury with every amenity in the cool part of town.

As was posted, there are plenty of apartments that are perfectly reasonable that are 10-15 minutes away from midtown instead of in it. They're just not walkable to cool bars. But if you think you are owed that, you should have gone to medical or law school.

I remember being excited moving to my first apartment that had washer and dryer connections inside so I didn't have to go to the laundry room. I didn't care that it was near Pleasantdale Road. I had a really fun roommate, we both worked bizarre hours at the same company, we paid next to nothing to live there ($765 for a 2-bedroom split between 2 guys), and we had a blast.

I'm not suggesting anyone live there because I'm not so sure that area can be called safe anymore, but there are plenty out there like it.

The fact that people can't live in affordable walkable neighborhoods is a problem in itself. Why should only the upper middle class and upper class be entitled to live in walkable, urban neighborhods, but a lower middle class citizen can't?

That's the inherent problem to cities themselves and why they'll never see the growth they did in the early 1900s. A kid making 50k a year should be able to live in a walkable, neighborhood.

A $50,000 "kid" could, at least in a loft or one bedroom; it is the $30,000 "kid" that couldn't.

Of course not West Paces Ferry; with massive estates, it simply "isn't walkable"!

My point was that people aren't entitled to live anywhere. If you can't afford to live somewhere then move to a place you can afford

I agree with this. The poor and the rich have great options when all is considered but the middle class is sorta limited.
