Henry County Commissioner Bruce Holmes recently met with Marta CEO Keith Parker at Marta headquarters to discuss expansion of rail & bus service into Henry County. Holmes sighted an eye opening study that transit is the biggest driver in business relocations for metro Atlanta. He continued “Imagine if you will a rail line down I-75 in Henry County on to Macon relieving traffic congestion.” Holmes said now is the time for transit in Henry County and he would like to see service in northern Henry County to the Fairview Medical Center as a top priority to serve the residents in his district. I would point out Porsche Motor Cars of North America as well as Mercedes Benz USA said transit was the deciding factor in where they chose to locate. Holmes closed by saying “Henry County needs to move forward with transit preparing to compete in the new global economy.” CEO Parker was encouraged by the proactive steps taken by Commissioner Holmes in their initial meeting echoing ARC Director Douglas Hooker saying Henry County is a key focus for the region at large especially south metro Atlanta.

Henry doesn't have the density to support typical Marta service. Maybe an express service or BRT.

Wow! That would really tie in well with just being able to extend the commuter rail down from Clayton on towards Macon.

They have plenty of population and density to support commuter rail service.

While this is good, is there anything that suggests that Henry County voters support MARTA membership? Remember, the county commissions can initiate the negotiation process for acceding to MARTA membership, but it all comes down to the voters in the end.

What about Henry County's legislative delegation to the General Assembly? The MARTA Act does not mention Henry County, so an amendment to that law would be required for Henry County to join. Such a bill wouldn't go anywhere unless the county's legislative delegation supported it.

Republicans control Henry County at the moment. MARTA will never become a reality until the county is controlled by Democrats, which should happen in the next election or two. Henry is becoming more blue each year as younger and more minority voters move in.
