Another Buckhead institution could be making way for more development....
Quote:
Now, Buckhead’s long-time Henri’s Bakery and Cafe is looking to make a similar move.

Phoenix, Ariz.-based Alliance Residential Co. is in advanced talks to acquire 61 Irby Avenue in the Buckhead Village — where Henri’s has been located since 1969 — and plans to build an apartment project in its place.
The site is roughly 0.6 acres and last sold in 1986 for $50,000, according to Fulton County property records. Today, it’s valued at $1.2 million, according to the county, but land values in the Buckhead Village have soared to more than $10 million per acre or higher for prime spots.
If the deal goes through, Alliance intends to relocate Henri’s to the ground floor of the development when it’s complete. During construction, Henri’s would operate from a temporary location nearby.
“We are ensuring our grandfather’s legacy lives on in the same location,” said Henri’s owner Madeline Leonard, whose grandfather Henri Fiscus in 1929 opened the bakery at the corner of Peachtree and 10th streets. Over the years, it moved around to several locations including Rhodes Center, Peachtree Palisades and the corner of Peachtree and Piedmont Avenue, before settling at Irby Avenue in 1969. The family opened a second location in Sandy Springs in 1984.

OP, how do you feel about it? Are you happy, sad, or indifferent?

I've gone to the Henri's in Sandy Springs many time to pick up cakes for the holidays. I even unsuccessfully tried to pass off a Thanksgiving meal as one I'd cooked lol. I'd kind of miss that spot if it was gone, but I have never gone to the one in Buckhead.

I'm kinda indifferent to it since I've never been there. I just hate to see local spots pushed out for development, but at the same time I know nothing last forever.

FYI read the article, it says clearly that Henri's will occupy a retail space in new development, only temporarily relocating while it is under construction. A win-win-win for all

My bad didn't see that part. Glad to see it will be apart of the new development.

I don't have an attachment to it either since I've never been to that location, but I can understand the feeling of wanting some things to stay the same. It's like how I am not a fan of The Varsity, but I still expect it to be there and not relocated.

I guess it should be considered progress and far be it from me to kick bread out someone else's mouth so whatever works for them. Some things just make you feel grounded like how it's comforting to see Cafe DU Monde in the French Market. i know it's going to be there through storms and even when they open other locations in new developments.

Sometimes trying to make everything shiny and new diminishes the quality that made it special.

Henri's is a true Atlanta institution, and one of my personal faves. It's hard to imagine taking a motorhome full of friends up to Athens without stocking up on Henri's sandwiches.

I'm glad they are staying put!

I'm a big fan of Henri's. They pack sandwiches in wax paper...as it should be.

I am glad to see this business is staying, getting an updated space, and adding density.

At 61 Irby Avenue, surrounded by Buckhead’s bar scene and just north of the Buckhead Theatre, Alliance Residential’s “The Irby” apartment complex is on the rise.

According to an Instagram post by BuckheadATL, the 12-story, 277-unit tower is nearing the end of its vertical construction.
