Yay! Twenty years later and Atlanta ranks very high in STD's. A overly sexualize culture back then and know doesn't help anyone. Let's start a Fatherhood festival and teach men to take responsibility for all these single parent kids in the black community. Let's make history that strengthens the community.

Nobody brings up the high death rate in regards prescription pill overdose and heroin deaths in the northern suburb and the drug overdose at EDM Festivals. Why not worry about the drug use/etc in the lower class trailer park community first. We arent trying to make history and start a festival that decrease active shooting deaths and white on white crime in the white community so keep this thread about Freaknik. If you want to discuss other topics make your on thread and stop hijacking this post. This is your final warning

op: You're new here apparently w/ a join date of November 2015 so you may not know that Freaknik has been discussed ad nauseam before on MULTIPLE threads. But, don't take my word for it. If you are that interested in Freaknik, you can easily find the threads.
Given that there have been and still are many relevant opinions on the many aspects of Freaknik, I find that that the sharp response @ 7:26 is absolutely unwarranted. What were you expecting for a response & were you expecting to control or direct it into only specific directions?

It might be better to consolidate all of this into one single thread: http://www.city-data.com/forum/atlan...-s-most-6.html

Freaknik was kinda fun at times but it was BAD for the city. It got to the point where restaurants/bars/retail closed for the weekend because no one could get around. I remember even seeing cars stopped on the connector holding up traffic while people were partying and hanging out. I started leaving town that weekend because it just got ridiculous.

Freaknik started out with good intentions, but it turned into a swarm of people uninterested in following the rules or in the mess they made and left behind. It wasn't so much a black vs white thing, but more of a right vs wrong thing. It just simply got out of hand.

Well there is a certain element that people who are white were quicker to complain about the negative affects, as it wasn't really an event for them.

Inversely, I think for awhile some black people were trying to hold onto something special and were a bit ambitious at trying to defend the negatives.

For me at the time I was a young white kid. It didn't really affect me, but I did feel a sense of pride for Atlanta that something unique was going on here vs. somewhere else.

What ultimately did this event in when it grew so big, is it literally shut the whole city down for a week. For all the people who have moved here since, this can not be understated. It got to the point where Atlanta was a major business center that pretty much had to halt operations for one week.

Part of the problem was once the streets couldn't handle the traffic, the streets just became that party area and people intentionally wanted to cruise around and stay on the roads for the party and everything just clogged up. This was a pretty widespread effect.

If you do spring break at a beach, it is a long linear strip that over miles can hold many people and everyone wants to be on the beach. Yes, the roads get pretty bad, but ultimately people want to get to a beach.

Freaknik over-spilled into areas with no free space, except for the streets. This also meant it was hard to re-position resources to locations where things were getting out of control. The event was spread out and transportation was clogged.

Sure large events and many people bring money into the city, but that pales in comparison to the widespread losses from having to shut everything down. Other events can shut down cities, but it is often in smaller and mid-size cities where the financial benefits outweigh the losses.
