I am not sure you understand how bankruptcy works. The government doesn't give you money if you declare bankruptcy.

But I won't deny the government is involved in the airline industry. Just no subsidy anywhere close to what middle east airlines get.

US airlines are arguably at a disadvantage in some ways compared to many other airlines.

Not only do they operate in a cutthroat domestic market (deregulation *really* changed things), but there are many international airlines which benefit a lot more from their countries of origin. Either they're outright owned (in whole or in part) by those governments, or they receive some sort of benefit by being the flag carrier for those governments.

Even things like labor laws can have an impact. You won't find Delta hiring only cute female flight attendants with certain physical qualities anymore because it would cause a firestorm, but that isn't true in some parts of the world. Not sure if it makes a real difference to travelers, but it might. Not everyone hops between carriers just to save $5 ... regular international travelers can have a very different attitude.

That said ... it's cool to see more airlines flying into ATL.

Yes I agree, but the United States is built on capitalism principles which supposedly let the free market decide. Furthermore, one major problem is the introduction of newer aircraft such as the (787/350) which has more amenities and make longer routes viable like (San Francisco- Chengdu, China) possible. I expect this struggle to continue, as the balance of airline power continues to swift from Traditional European hubs like Heathrow, Charles De Gaulle, and Frankfurt to Middle Eastern Hubs like Dubai, Doha, and Istanbul.

However, I didn't expect the transfer of connecting hubs from Europe to Middle Eastern cities to reach and affect United States flights (Delta's Dubai-Atlanta/JFK-Istanbul ) so quickly. I would monitor how legacy US carriers continue to cut international flights. On the contrary, how does the government regulate a product that some Americans prefer to use, yet knowing its not in line with the United States way of doing business or free market ethical principles.

The solution could be fewer US carriers that could offer a better product, but based on supply and demand that will drive up prices. I think we will continue to see Delta, United, and American retreat internationally as Middle Eastern Carriers continue to grow. The Department of Transportation who grants route authority will be force to respond.

Good comments, Atlwarrior. I'd rep you, but it tells me I can't. I'm torn by the whole situation between US airlines and others, since I worked for a US major for over a decade, but I've had international airlines as customers now for longer than that. I just want everyone to win and make lots of money. And bring fares down at the same time so I can afford to fly. I miss non-revving, but my bennies are limited now to ID90 fares at best. Not quite the same.

I agree. I do understand that the M.E. carriers get a lot more financial assistance but you can't point fingers if in the U.S. the same is being done. I absolutely agree. To be honest, capitalism is only for poor people; socialism is for the super wealthy.

But it is not the same.

How do you justify the ME3 domination of international markets in your mind? Do you think all these US carriers are cutting back their flights because the US is not able to operate airlines as well?
