I was looking at this article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle about the top alarm systems and it looks like they've got under 500,000 properties combined.

I'm sure there are many more smaller companies, but does this imply that there are large numbers of homes and businesses without security monitoring?

No lie we have nails in holes for our windows. The previous owner installed them. We are thinking about getting some cameras. 200 bucks can get us 4 with something like a TB or more of hard drive space for video.

The only reason I have one is because my e-wife made me get one. There hasn't been a break-in in my neighborhood in the 11 years we've been there. A few unlocked cars rifled through by kids. Two mailbox incidents.

Are you targeting homes without alarm systems for some reason?

I'm sure you aren't.

Heh! I'm too old to be climbing through windows.

Seriously, I was just a little surprised there weren't more security systems. I sort of figured they were a standard item these days.

I got one a few years ago when I was working nights and kept it....mainly because I really like the idea of my monitored smoke detector. Seems like every second the fire department can respond sooner to a fire can save an armload of loss, but mainly I hope it means they could respond in time to save my dog if I'm not home!

I think nowadays a lot of people are getting wireless systems and either not monitoring them or using smaller, less expensive companies. So those may not be accounted for in the numbers you are seeing. Still, 500,000 isn't anything to sneeze at. I mean, how many households are there in the metro area?

Why do you ask Arjay? You planning a heist?

I have a security system. Most companies I am familiar with have some sort of security even if it's only keycard entry and some cameras. Most people I know here do not have home security systems. Can't come up with a percentage estimate for the metro based on the number of people I know so it's impossible for me to say with any authority.

What if you're not home? Somebody could slip in and steal your stuff, including your gun.
