Last Friday, Macy's announced that they will close 100 stores which are underperforming. Given the fact that if you averaged out the 50 states, the average state will lose two stores. Also, many states don't have even one store and Alabama, for example, has two Macy's and both are in strong malls in relatively high income suburbs of Birmingham, so I don't see either one closing. Therefore, it is almost guaranteed that some of the Metro Atlanta Macy's will close. Here is the article describing the closures: Macy’s, Inc. Outlines Moves to Drive Profitable Growth and Enhance Shareholder Value | Business Wire

Here are the locations which I see closing:

1. Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville
2. South DeKalb Mall
3. The Mall at Stonecrest
4. Macon Mall (I know it's not considered Metro Atlanta, but I definitely see it closing as retail in Macon has moved northward to The Shoppes at River Crossing - Dillard's moved there several years ago.)

This will definitely not be welcome news to the respective counties and cities which will lose the sales tax revenue and the jobs which each store provides. These malls will definitely struggle to fill the space left by such a large anchor. Department stores are struggling to compete with online and outlet centers and this move by Macy's acknowledges that fact.

Which locations do you see Macy's will closing?

If I`m not mistaken the South Dekalb Macys is one of the top in the state performance wise.

I'm concerned about the future of my own local Southlake Mall Macy's store.

I'm worried about Gwinnett Place.

Not so much for the Macy's itself, but because if it closes, I'm pretty sure that means the Sears would close. And I'd really miss that.

I agree and didn't realize that Macy's Gwinnett Place is still open. I would put the likelihood of that store closing at the top of the list.

Gwinnett Place Mall will probably be bulldozed and some other use built on that property.

The current owners don't seem to be moving in that direction. They seem, for whatever reason, to be doing everything within their power to effectively kill that mall, which I believe could have been saved with the correct management. But we're probably past that point now.

Regardless of what they do, I hope the Sears figures out how to stay. Always good to have a Sears nearby, but I guess there's always North Point.

It's sad because I just KNOW that someday shoppers are going to say, "why are we walking around in the heat and rain to go from store to store? Wouldn't it be nice if we had climate controlled covered hallways connecting everything?" and the mall will be reborn. After we've torn them all down.

I don't see all malls being torn down. Those in higher income areas will still be around - I'm not the least bit worried about Lenox, Phipps, Perimeter and North Point closing their doors. The challenge which Gwinnett Place faces is that so much of the population surrounding it resides in apartments. Thirty years ago when G.P. opened, the apartments nearby, as well as the single family homes had residents who were professionals. However, as the apartments aged, the demographics of the residents changed and the income levels went down, too. As a result, the stores in the mall struggles with many of them closing and it started a downward spiral which has led to the mall being in the shape it's in now.
