Hey, all. It looks like DH will be getting a job offer in Locust Grove later this year, so we're looking for a good place for our family to live. We have 5 kids (K to 9th in the fall) so schools are a high priority.

We're thinking Fayette County might be worth the commute for him (and he might be able to work earlier to minimize that as much as we can). Our budget is up to $450k or so, and we'd love to live in a diverse area.

We'd rather not go further from the city, but are there any areas, maybe east of Atlanta, where we should be looking?

If your DH is going to be commuting to and from work in Locust Grove then you probably should be trying to live as close to his workplace as possible.

Before you look in an area like Fayette County, you should probably look for housing in the county where your DH’s place of work will be located (Henry County).

Look in areas like the Union Grove and Ola clusters, which feature the best (highest-rated and highest-regarded) public schools in the Henry County school system before looking for housing elsewhere in the greater Southern Crescent of the Atlanta suburbs.

Like Fayette County, the Union Grove and Ola clusters of the Henry County school system offer a high-quality public school education and experience in Atlanta’s southern suburbs that is comparable to and competitive with the highly touted areas of public schools in Atlanta’s northern suburbs.

Why not live in Locust Grove? It has some nice neighborhoods. Otherwise Jonesboro might be a good investment as I can foresee being up and coming in the near future.

Not if the OP is looking for excellent schools right now.

Thanks, Born 2 Roll. I missed those schools, but (of course) you're right, they do look good!

Thanks, SEAandATL. Like citidata18 said, we are looking for good schools now, since my oldest will be entering 9th grade this fall.

If schools are very important, I think Fayette County would be an excellent choice, but I'd stay on the southern end of the county to make the commute tolerable. The Whitewater district in Fayette County is probably closest to Locust Grove. I also wouldn't rule out Starr's Mill either. I live in the Starr's Mill district, and the schools are outstanding. We have kids in elementary, middle, and high school here. There is also a great sense of community, and high school sports and extracurricular activities are some of the best in the state. Starr's Mill traditionally has a strong football program (state semi-finalists this year), and competes for state championships every year in sports like soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, golf, cross country, track and field, volleyball, cheer, and swimming. The fine arts program is also top notch. The Marching Band wins numerous grand championships every season.

The area is on the affluent side, the average home price is probably around 500k, but there are also many middle famillise too.

To be in the Starr's Mill or Whitewater districts, you should look for homes in Southern Fayetteville, Brooks, and Southern Peachtree City. The top rated schools in this area are probably the Braelinn or Peeples Elementary district which both feed into Rising Starr and Starr's Mill. Braelinn and Peeples are routinely ranked in the top 5-10% of schools, Rising Starr is also ranked in the top 10 of all middle schools in the state, and Starr's Mill is usually ranked in the top 20 high schools in the state for various standardized tests.

Good luck!
