Hi. Family in early stages of relocation to the ATL. Job location is midtown - right on peachtree street. Requirements are as follows:

- Decent public schools; do not want it to have a great schools ranking of 9 or 10, but no lower than 6.
- easy access (<20 min during off-peak hours) to buford hwy and suburbs NE of the perimeter (duluth, suwanee, norcross)
- Detached home - 4+ BR, 3+ BA with some yard space (1/4 acre ideal)
- 40 minutes drive door to door to midtown location leaving home at 7 am, leaving office at 430 pm
- reasonable property taxes
- price up to 600k

My search is showing sandy springs, roswell. Is alpharetta a stretch? What else can i consider?

Many thanks in advance.

You won't make it from Alpharetta to midtown in under 40 mins during rush hour.

Brookhaven and Decatur are both really great options that would check all of your boxes. I don't know your budget though. Brookhaven property taxes are lower than Decatur. Brookhaven would be your best bet for great schools, nice homes, easy commute to Midtown and super close to NE suburbs, in fact Buford Highway runs right through Brookhaven.

Norcross to Midtown in under 20 minutes during off-peak hours is narrowly possible, on paper. Don't count on it being the norm.

Yes, Chamblee/Brookhaven or close-in Sandy Springs would be your best options.

I don't think distance from Midtown is the biggest factor so much as distance to freeway. Depending on where you live, 3 miles to/from 400 or I-285 could be far worse than the 20 or so freeway miles. The arterials (what few there are) here really, really suck.

Agreed. There is also the Brookhaven MARTA station, if he works in midtown near a MARTA station and does not need a car while at work.

Didn't the OP say 40 minutes? Probably doable from Norcross with a 7am and 4:30pm departure most days.

This, this, this, this!!!!

It could take you a shorter time to get to work coming from Roswell than coming from another section of midtown!

Ok, maybe not quite that bad, but distance isn't nearly so much a factor as what your actual route to work entails.
