I am helping a friend of mines move to Atlanta from the Research Triangle and he is 26 years old. We were looking at some places and Brookhaven seems nice but we wonder if it would be a bad place to be for a person in their 20s that isn't settled down.

Brookhaven's apts are mostly 20 somethings. Closet to Buckhead, etc.

If I was in my 20s though, I'd be looking at Poncey Highlands.

Brookhaven runs the gamut demographically.
If it were close to the things to which I needed proximity, I as a twentysomething would be fine about living there.

Depends. Some people don't like the midtown/high rise lifestyle. Brookhaven might be the best of both worlds--some walkability, but also convenience of not having to go up and down in elevators etc. There's an awesome running club out of the Brookhaven Peach running store that could seal the deal if he's a runner. Or Buckhead Church if he is Christian is a draw for young people in the area.

I lived in Brookhaven for about 5 years in my 20s for this reason, I wanted a house with a garage instead of a high rise apartment but I still wanted to be close to the city.

To the contrary, Brookhaven is an area that is very much on the rise with young professionals because of its status as an up-and-coming Intown district that is the site of a MARTA Heavy Rail (subway) station (a station that has been targeted to be the site of a future high-profile mixed-use transit-oriented development) and because of its location next to the uber-trendy upscale Buckhead district.

Lots of social opportunities for people in their 20s in the Brookhaven district. Brookhaven also provides good access to social (and cultural) opportunities in other parts of the Atlanta area.

You may not find Brookhaven as then "perfect" 20-something paradise, BUT, as the other poster stated, it is nearby or even adjacent to many other areas. It literally touches the City of Atlanta's Buckhead/ Uptown district and is minutes from many other parts of the City and the Metro; a "centralized" location so to speak.

Like others have said, Brookhaven runs the gamut from tiny shoe box apartments filled with immigrant families to multi-million dollar mansions. Certain neighborhoods have a common theme, but even then that's not always true.

If there is one way to sum up Brookhaven though is that if you are either upper middle class/rich or lower middle class/poor, Brookhaven caters to everything you need. If you fall in the middle, Brookhaven will have what you need but doesn't stack up as well yet with other suburban or urban middle income neighborhoods in Atlanta.

Basically, Brookhaven is an odd place. LOL

I've been browsing apartments in the area and yea this is basically what I've found. Lots of decent apartments that really aren't that cheap. Or lots of older apartments with low ratings that are decently cheap. Not much in the middle.
