I'm not going to ride one of those things. Just imagine that you are zipping along at 500 mph and some yahoo decides it would be fun to use the tube for target practice. Just as you are enjoying your 500 mph trip, the tube implodes and you go zooming through the air and experience a very difficult landing. Nope. I ain't getting in one of those things!

Elon Musk would obviously build a tunnel.

Ah, so another order of magnitude's worth of construction costs added on, then?

Digging a tunnel didn't seem to hold anybody back at the Bellwood Quarry park. We've already got the machine, why not use it?

Well, the Belwood Reservoir tunnels don't need to be pulled down to an atmospheric equivalent of 30,000ft, no small task along the hundreds of mile of tubing.

Because it's not the right size for digging transportation tunnels. Nor is likely designed for the level of digging being proposed here. It would probably be better, were one to try to do this via tunnels, to just get a whole new machine designed for the project.

Also, tunnels remove one of the advantages of the above-ground system: solar power generation. That was one of the ways that Musk was going to try to keep costs down, by producing all the electricity needed to operate the system with solar panels on the roof.

lol. not even sure what to say to that. i'm white and have participated in all of that behavior before to try and curry favor with elitist whites. look at my posts a few years back, i am sure you will find *plenty* of examples to indict me on. these are major problems urban and suburban whites have and it's time we owned up to it. if you won't hear it from another white person, who will you hear it from?

How big does the tunnel have to be for the hyperloop?

All these other cities don't seem to have a problem digging big tunnels. Cobb had no problem building a 24 foot diameter tunnel 5 miles long.

Are we a special case that can't do that?

But aren't they supposed to be like 500 miles long? Not that it isn't an interesting idea. You are right on general principle that if Cobb and Atlanta can afford to dig these tunnels they should be able to afford to put in *some* form of transit.
