What are some cities within max an hour from Gwinnett County in either direction. Small town feel with decent amenities. Low crime, great housing. Curious as to what towns are out there that I haven't researched yet. Not sure if I will like living in Gwinnett county, trying to see what other options are out there.

Max hour commute from where? The border of Gwinnett County? Gwinnett's huge.

Small town feel, then you probably don't want Atlanta or DeKalb or North Fulton.

Um, what's wrong with Gwinnett? All its towns have the small town feel. Norcross, Duluth, Suwanee, Buford, and all the rest.

My pick would be Athens... it's just 30 miles east of Gwinnett County. Home of The University of Georgia.
Another option would be Gainesville.. it's by Lake Lanier.

Agree on Athens or for Gainesville, specifically look at homes that are assigned to North Hall High School. I have a feeling that's what you're looking for...

Like the AUGnative and flamadiddle stated, Gainesville, Athens and Braselton are really good choices as outlying cities with a small-town feel that are within an hour of Gwinnett County.

Braselton is a fast-growing exurban outpost with a rural feel in many areas that spreads across parts of Hall, Jackson, Barrow and far-Northeastern Gwinnett counties.

Athens is a major college town that is home to the flagship campus of the University of Georgia system (and the tens-of-thousands of students that attend there).

Gainesville is a center of commerce, industry, culture and (especially) politics for Northeast Georgia that provides great-to-excellent access to the popular (and cherished) Blue Ridge/Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Georgia, Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee.

Though, despite the booming population, continued development and overcrowding throughout many parts of Gwinnett County, like primaltech noted, there are also areas within Gwinnett County (like Norcross, Duluth, Suwanee and Buford) that offer the small-town feel that you are looking for.

From the sound of it, he might prefer one of the cities/counties outside of Athens. Watkinsville in Oconee County maybe? --especially if schools are a priority. Also, Madison might be worth a look. But, if it were me, I would find something in Gwinnett that I liked. An hour commute to get away from Gwinnett? Sounds like a lot of unnecessary pain to me.

I guess an hour commute from the center of the county, Lawrenceville? We still need to visit but have heard that all of Gwinnett county is heavily populated. I'm not totally throwing living there out the window just trying to get some ideas of other places thats still within driving distance of the county.
