Seems like times are really changing in the ATL.

Two guys at Chattahoochee got shot down as prom kings. However, the other students are rallying to their defense.

Quote:
The pair were initially chosen by students to serve on the so-called royal court, but were told by school administrators that they could not be considered for the top title because the school's rules only allowed for one male and one female to be chosen, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Nearly a thousand signatures on a petition seeking changes to the process had been tallied by Friday afternoon.

Three boys and three girls were nominated, and the students were required to chose one male and one female to serve as prom king and queen. The original petition called on Chattahoochee High School to tweak its process to allow two people, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, to have a shot at winning the title.

"This not only allows the chance for a homosexual couple to possibly win, but it also ensures that the most deserving people win," the original petition added. "This means that if the most deserving of the nominees are two girls, they would both be allowed to win, instead of historically only allowing one to be crowned royalty."

Good for the protesting kids. I tell you - today's high schoolers are going to change our world. And, for the better.

I think so, too, Ansley. And they are making a strong showing here in the ATL.

I don’t really I’m assuming the process is this. You apply to run as prom king or queen according to gender and the school votes for the individual king or queen. If it were done in pairs I would understand, but allowing two kings to be elected instead of a king and a queen would make it unfair to the females running. Tell me I’m missing something here.

I don't think you are. The way it sounds to me is that three females and three males are chosen, not three couples. From there a male and female are chosen as K&Q. So in theory a gay man and a lesbian could be chosen. Who gets to be queen and who gets to be king is up to them.
I don't infer that the couple chosen are necessarily a couple IRL.

Yep, I agree with you. The king can take his boyfriend as his date, can have him escort him onto the field etc. but if the rules say one boy and one girl get elected, then that is how it works, sorry. If they want to revise the rules so it is the two highest vote-getters, have at it for next year.

It sounds like you are right.

There are also quite a few other variables. What would stop the students from simply voting for two straight men? If they aren't real couples and you're going to make it gender neutral, you can't say people have to be gay to get elected to a gender that is not their own.

It's an interesting point, and it foreshadows how careful we have to be to make sure that gay rights don't infringe on womens rights, and vice versa.

I think the rules say one woman and one man. Sounds reasonable.
I'd be more worried about a vicious rival dumping pig blood on me when I won and releasing my incredible telekinetic powers...oops, wrong movie.

I thought students didn't vote in couples. But rather the most popular, well-liked male / female. How often are the King and Queen an actual item?

I can see the kids wanting a transgender Queen but this isn't a popularity contest of favorite couple.

If one of the males identified as being female. Ok. But lets not shut out the lady's opportunity to be Queen.
