I don't think you can avoid that. The wealthy areas are going to have the kids that are the most academically ambitious.

Based on your criteria and accompanying details, I recommend:

Walton High Cluster of East Cobb

Pope High Cluster of East Cobb

Here are some helpful maps:

Been doing some driving around and visiting and really liked what I saw with Timber Ridge Elementary. I haven't visited the high schools yet, but I saw a couple of homes that are listed as Timber Ridge and then zoned to Pope, and one that was listed as Timber Ridge and zoned to Walton. I looked into it further and it looks like Timber Ridge is zoned to both Dodgen and Dickerson. How does that work? Is zoning done on a street by street basis? Can one subdivision be zoned for different schools? I ask only because I'm familiar with a school being 100% a feeder for another school, not split up.

Thanks for that recommendation, I will let my real estate agent know. Glad to hear your kids are enjoying Walton. I spoke to another mom whose daughter graduated last year and really liked her HS experience, looks like we are on the right track with our school search!

Roughly 25% of Timber Ridge feeds into Dickerson Middle and roughly 75% of Timber Ridge feeds into Dodgen Middle.

Take a look at this link here: http://www.cobbk12.org/schools/CCSD_...terns_2019.pdf
*Then scroll down to Timber Ridge to see. Also, look at the feeder patterns of the other schools.

Of the Timber Ridge students that go on to Dickerson Middle, all of those students will end up at Walton High.

Of the Timber Ridge students that go on to Dodgen Middle, some of the those students will end up at Pope High and some will end up at Walton High--depending on the neighborhood.

You will notice on the link above that Dickerson Middle is a 100% feeder to Walton High. Dodgen Middle feeds roughly 34% into Pope High and 66% into Walton High.

After looking at the feeder patterns, study the maps below to get a broader understanding:

http://www.cobbk12.org/centraloffice...esMasterES.pdf

http://www.cobbk12.org/centraloffice...esMasterMS.pdf

http://www.cobbk12.org/centraloffice...esMasterHS.pdf

Here is a map of the Timber Ridge Elementary zone: http://www.cobbk12.org/centraloffice...er%20Ridge.pdf
*The parts of the Timber Ridge attendance area that are zoned for Pope are along and near Oak Lane, Bishop Lake Road, and the part of Johnson Ferry Road that is south of Oak Lane and north of Sewell Mill Road (Neighborhoods: Chadds Walk, Chadds Ford, Bishop's Green, Edgemere, etc.). The rest of the Timber Ridge attendance area is zone for Walton.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for all of those links. My goodness, this makes the zoning at APS look well-planned! Looks like I'm going to have to look at homes by street to see which sections are Timber Ridge/Dickerson/Walton. Is rezoning common in Cobb?

Actually, I would say that zoning in Cobb County is well-planned overall. Split feeder patterns are OK if the a feeder cohort is at least 24%.

Rezoning is not as common in Cobb currently because it is not growing as fast as it did in the 70s, 80s, 90s. This is especially true in East Cobb. However, Pope, Lassiter, Sprayberry, and Kell are somewhat more underpopulated than Walton and Wheeler so future rezoning is never off the table.

Growing up in East Cobb in the 80s and 90s, I was rezoned between 6th and 7th grade - and I went to a different high school from my older brother and sister due to rezoning. My older sister went through a high school rezoning between 9th and 10th grade.

Cobb was once growing so fast, that the neighborhood I grew up in ended up going to four different middle schools between 1983 and 1993 (it has been the same middle school since 1993). Mabry --> McCleskey (1983) --> Simpson (1988) --> Hightower Trail (1993).

If you like Walton, Timber Ridge/Dodgen/Walton is also an option.

Half my neighborhood is Timber Ridge and half Mt Bethel. My kid is at Mt Bethel. Very happy so far. As are all parents I know. Only difference that always comes up is Timber Ridge is smaller. People tend to prefer that vibe for elementary. But nobody complains about Mt Bethel, it’s wonderful. Our kid’s Kindergarten teacher teared up at orientation with how much she loves
her job and teaching the kids. I mean, wow.

All the kids from our neighborhood join up for middle and HS. Dickerson and Walton.
