I've been looking at homes up to 400K in Acworth, Marietta, Kennesaw, Powder Springs, Roswell, and Smyrna. Will possibly relocate this Summer. Most of the homes I like the best seem to be in Acworth. This would be Cobb County Schools, which I have read are the best so can anyone give me any general info on Acworth particularly Durham Middle School? My daughter would be entering 7th grade. She also takes dance and I did a search and found CK Dance Works on Cedar Crest Rd. I was wondering if anyone could speak from personal experience on this dance school? Website looks great and looks like it is a nice dance school. Also Preschools in the area. My youngest daughter will be 4 in July so I need to find a place for her to go for one year before she starts Kindergarten. I'm open to Preschool Centers or a Baptist Church Preschool, but I do need full time care as I will be working. Last thing..... Acworth seems to be one of the smaller towns I'm choosing from so how close to shopping is it? (Mall, grocery stores, Walmart, etc) Thanks in advance for any input.

The Cobb schools that people generally consider to be "the best" aren't in the Acworth area- they're all on the other side of town (East Cobb). That's not to say that your schools will be bad, but I wouldn't focus on Acworth if you're looking for "the best" schools.

I live in the Kennesaw / Acworth area. The North Cobb county schools are very good schools. I have heard good things about Durham. Is it the Kennesaw Mountain High district?

East Cobb schools do have a great reputation but there were several reasons we decided East Cobb was not for us. We really like this area and my daughter (she is in 3rd grade) has had a great school experience, so far.

My son is 4 years old and goes to Primrose School of Kennesaw North. We love it. My daughter also went to Primrose.

There are several websites you can visit that will give you information on each of the Cobb County Schools.

Good Luck!

It is actually Harrison High which I see is rated 24 in the State (#4 in Cobb County). Kennesaw Mountain is ranked 54 in the State (#6 in Cobb County).

Primrose School.... actually found that on line last night and e-mailed them directly for some info. What are their rates? Does your son do the Preschool or the Pre K? At 4, can you choose either?

Thanks so much for the info! I really do appreciate it. I'm looking forward to the possible move back "home" to the South! The Winters here are killer for a Southern Girl!

My sister's sons came up in those schools and it was a great experience for them...they ended up at Cornell, Naval Academy and GA Tech.

This is a fine personal anecdote illustrating that the metro area has lots of public schools that successfully prepare students for excellent colleges. I think people get way too concerned about the poor reputation of Georgia schools overall, and about small differences in test score averages.

Of course we should be very concerned about Georgia's troubled schools, and supporting efforts to improve matters there. But middle-class folk moving to middle-class areas in metro Atlanta really don't need to be panicky about the schools available to their kids. They just need to do a little research. There are plenty of areas where a very good public education is available.

You might want to check CCSD's website, because I think that most, if not all of Durham MS will now attend Allatoona HS starting this coming fall. Allatoona HS is a new HS and will pull students from Harrison HS, Kennesaw Mtn HS, and North Cobb HS.

My son will be in the private Pre K class in the fall. He has a September birthday so he will not be able to start kindergarten next year.
He is in the 3/4 yr old class now. He goes 3 days a week.

They also have a GA Pre K, and will have a kindergarten class for the first time next year.

I think the GA pre K is @ 50.00 a week, I might be totally off.
The private will be @ 180.00 a week for full time. They also offer part time.

ITA. Here's the thing, too...my sister (herself an educator) set high standards for my nephews; "you're not going to be the smartest one in the class, so you better be the hardest working" (LOL). She never relied on the relative merits of this school or that school, but on her childrens' individual performance. You can't just throw them in there and 'let the system work its' magic'.
Anyway, it paid off.
