Are these a cherished Southern tradition, or something particular to our neck of the woods (No. Fulton)? I've seen evidence of them, mostly toilet paper, but I wonder if they are generally tolerated by the local police departments. My son's girlfriend is in a parochial school, and she tells me all the schools do it. We haven't been here long enough to know if that's true, so I'm hoping someone can fill me in.

"Papering" someone's yard/house/trees does happen throughout the metro area, though I'd not go so far as to say it happens with everyone. You hear of it, but it's not an everyday thing. Most of the time it's limited to toilet paper, but there have in the past been reported instances of eggings, or things that cross over into serious vandalism (again, not "common", but it happens).

It's not a harmless prank. As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago, a man caught kids doing it to his home and chased them in his car, causing them to wreck (at least one of them died in the wreck). It IS technically considered vandalism too, and no, police don't ignore it (it's just extremely hard to catch who did it unless you videotape them or get tag numbers, etc).

I think you are referring to the incident involving a group Sprayberry female students (some were cheerleaders)...this situation was infamous and was a catalyst in changing Georgia's Teen Driving Laws.

It happened in the mid to late 1990's.

Yep. That's the one. But this type of thing has happened much more than once - it's just that usually wrecks/fatalities aren't involved, so it doesn't make the news.
