According to this article Census: Despite economy, Fulton population swells | ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories/2009/03/19/georgia_census_growth.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_ne wstab#comments - broken link) released today Fulton county likely reached the 1 million population mark as of last summer. Also of the 50 fastest growing counties in the nation 6 of them are in Georgia.

This is the first time any political boundary inside Georgia other than the entire Atlanta metro area has reached the 1 million milestone.

My question is does anyone think Atlanta has what it takes economically to support all this growth? Besides providing administrative headquarters to many large national firms and a used to be hot real estate market what else does Atlanta really offer? Manufacturing seems to be declining as faster or faster here than the rest of America. Is the music industry and emerging telecommunications/movie industry enough to help out?

You're right, Galounger - we are really losing our old manufacturing sector pretty rapidly.

Just in the last couple of years we've lost our 2nd GM plant and our Ford plant. I guess the only true heavy industry left would be LockheadMartin at Dobbins?

BUT, I honestly believe that our economy is so diversified here that we will be one of the first large metros to emerge from the recession. You have to remember that we have such a critical mass of solid business infrastructure now that most (not all) metros can't really match what we offer. And, as the region from DC to Texas continues to grow, so will Atlanta.
