I know the town center concept is popular right now in the northern burbs, but the plans for Johns Creek are pretty ambitious. It will be interesting how the turn out....
Quote:
The 8-year-old north Fulton County enclave is considering developing a 728-acre central business district that advocates say would rival the core of Midtown Atlanta. It would dwarf similar efforts in Sandy Springs, Alpharetta and elsewhere.

The proposal – more a concept than a specific plan so far – is born of a stark reality: Johns Creek is heavily dependent on property taxes paid by homeowners, a dependence city officials fear could undermine their budget in the long run. They want to transform the sprawling Technology Park along Medlock Bridge Road into a densely packed retail, office, residential and entertainment district. It would triple the size of downtown Charlotte, N.C.

Neighborhoods like Midtown takes decades to develop...many changes could happened within that time period that can slow down or speed up development...like economic recessions.

While I admire their ambitions, Midtown developed the way it is partly because it's located in the core of a massive 5.5 million metropolitan area, located along a transit line, and has an elite school located in it.

Holy crap it's 8 years old already?

Anyway, I do think something is needed as a downtown or town center. I love the suburbs and all but I think these mindless cities with an arbitrary center are just silly.

I think our solution to having more cityhood proposals than Walgreens on a street corner is to require that a city either already have or establish a downtown core with appropriate municiple buidlings, park, and general downtown feel within two-five years of establishment, depending upon initial population. Also there should be a minimum population requirement of at least 25k. Failing to fulfill all obligations will result in immediate unincorporation and possible incorporation into the nearest local municipality.

Where is Technology Park in relation to the intersection of Medlock Bridge Road and State Bridge Road? Is it closer to McGinnis Ferry Road, or is it the other way?

What a generic name for an office park. That'd be like naming Northpoint Mall "The Mall."

The bulk of midtown, as you know it today, developed over the past 20 years or so.

The real meat of it happened between around 1997 and 2007.

You're right..."Midtown Soars after the 1996 Olympics" Midtown soars after 1996 Olympics | 11alive.com

But Midtown began to develop a real skyline with Colony Square in 1969. That was the real catalyst that started Midtown on the path to what it is today, so although the bulk of the skyline transformation has come in the past 20 years, Midtown has been developing for more like 40-50 years.
