Wow.... seriously?

You throw out accusations of racism and yet lament the attempts of a long dead government's efforts to maintain it?

Good lord, I'm glad that views like Professor Reed's and yours are fading fast into the mists of history. Such common spitefulness as you have shown is why there is no peace in this world, least of all in Georgia.

I'm not being spiteful, just pointing out the obvious. If you can't see it I feel for you.

Yes, you are. Save your sympathy and your crocodile tears, my fellow Georgian.

I don't want it from a person who willingly pays homage to a dead government that is known for aggressively defending the bondage of other sentient beings.

You know, you really could have done without the quote...I don't know if anybody can deny that Atlanta's police chiefs have purposefully been chosen because they were/are black, and that's more than enough to shame the monarchy we have in the city.

I put up the quote to make a point. I never said the confederacy was right and I haven't attempted to justify any of the transgressions perpetrated. I am merely pointing out the current conditions and using a sarchastic comment to do so. It is a very fiting observation, not just for Atlanta but for many cities.

“With 15 days to go Part I crimes are down 12 percent,” Pennington said, at Franklin’s regular press conference to discuss city business.

The outgoing police chief said murder, rape, robberies and aggravated assaults are all down. To date, he said there have been 75 murders reported in the city.

“We are proud of our murder statistics,” Pennington said. “The 75 murders are the lowest we have had in 40 years. In 2002, when I came, we had 167 murders.”

From my observations it seems like the perception of crime and fear are definitely up...
While this is very good news, it is not a signal to start a celebration. Another way to look at the 23rd ranking is that of the 400 largest cities in the country, one is statistically less likely to be a victim of crime in 382 of them than in Atlanta. Its great that the numbers are declining but its silly to pretend that there is only a perception of a crime problem in this city.

As far as I'm concerned, those improved numbers are more a direct result of demolishing those crime and poverty incubators (the housing projects) and revitalization that has occurred in the city over that time frame than anything Pennington has done.

That's a very astute observation and certainly more realistic than anything I've read on here in awhile.

Lots of folks have said that it started with the coming of the olympics, which they say was the impetus to run a lot of the riff raff out of the city in time for the activites to commence.
