I am a teacher (K-5) in Ohio and will be new to the area (Dacula) this summer because my fiance was transfered to the area. I have been looking in nearby counties for teaching jobs (Gwinnett, Walton, Hall, Fulton, Cobb, Fulton, Forsyth, Barrow, DeKalb)... no luck. I have heard there is a hiring freeze in areas and the outlook is not good. Does anyone think there is reason to hope for openings this coming school year? What about in 2011?

Thanks!

No time soon.

No money to pay for them.

Teachers under 3 years aka non tenured are being let go under non renewals.

You have senior teachers who are being let go too.

Pretty much, the next 2 or 3 years, it will be a glut of teachers in the marketplace until tax revenues pick back up.

Something interesting that I heard the other day in talking to the owner of a small tutoring company (private version of the Huntington or Sylvan-type places):

1. Having so many teachers laid off is making it easier for him to find top-quality employees

2. Increased class sizes due to lower numbers of teachers in the schools will result in less learning, and increase the amount of students needing tutoring (in theory)

Silver lining in the cloud, right?

Very, very grim outlook for the next two years. Hiring freezes, massive amounts of layoffs, expectation is that by the end of the summer there will be 10,000 education workers (teachers, paras, etc) who lose their jobs state wide.

You may find a job opening here and there for whatever reason, but there will be thousands of applicants for one position. It isn't like the old days where you can just walk in and get hired on the spot.

For specialized subject like advanced Math- AP Calculus and Science it will not be as tough IMO.

I wouldn't be so sure.

See Wheeler High Magnet Program. Even formerly hard-to-fill STEM teaching positions are being eliminated:

I was afraid of those responses. I just found out that Gwinnett has a hiring freeze for substitutes also. So there goes that idea. I just started looking at Private Schools. Most don't have information on employment on their website. Once I move in three weeks I will take my resume around to private schools. Any suggestions on websites that might have some listed? I've also been looking for any other type of educational job such as online teaching or selling educational books, equipment or software. Should I be looking into anything else?

If you decide on a private school, be prepared for a significantly lower salary. Even the most prestigious ones pay a good 1/3 lower than public schools.
