I'm really looking forward to seeing what this will be. It will be a gamechanger for downtown.

Quote:
It's a piece of land that sits empty right now, and it's prime real estate right next to the Augusta Riverwalk and the marina. It's getting a lot of attention. It's not clear what may happen, but it's no secret something big is in the works at the Old Depot Property.

"I think you're going to see downtown Augusta thrive like it has never thrived before," Frantom said.

Frantom says the depot deal will be a game changer, but he isn't commenting on what exactly it's going to be, and neither will other city leaders, but we do know it would include a parking garage.

The development agreement is expected to be signed next week. Frantom thinks it's an important project for the whole area.

"I don't care if you are in Columbia County, North Augusta, Aiken, downtown Augusta is life and those communities wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Augusta," Frantom said.

Darby Carpenter, the general manager of Farmhaus grew up downtown and says we are in the middle of a downtown revival.

"I think there is an unlimited potential in downtown Augusta," Carpenter said.

Carpenter thinks it's a no brainer to bring big projects downtown. he says Farmhaus is ready.

"For us it's looking to see whose coming, looking to see what's next, looking to see what other businesses are going to open up," Carpenter said.

As the city works on bringing action to this empty piece of land, city leaders are already talking about upgrading the marina right behind it, maybe even bringing in a ferry to take people back and forth to Project Jackson.
All eyes are on the old depot property near the Augusta Riverwalk for development

An residential component is suppose to be included. Hoping the entire site and the parking deck are both mixed-use.

So glad to hear it's finally being developed-always have hated seeing the old depot sitting there in that prime spot. I used to always think if I had money, I'd buy it and develop it. Wasn't this supposed to be the location of the Watermark development back before the Recession?

Finally… that lot has sat there empty for my entire life and now it seems as though something will set up shop and help revitalize downtown and the river front. I just hope that whatever it is, truly lives up to the literal intent of the phrase "game changer". To me that phrase is used more than it should be in terms of new projects like this, but here's to hoping it is something truly groundbreaking and something truly unforeseen in these parts before. Guess we'll see.
