It depends on the demand Savannah has. Since its projected Savannah will step up it production, Augusta could vital and will develope a nice size port.

It would only make sense econimcally if Augusta had product to ship back down to Savannah.. It really doesn't. Back wehen cotton was King it did, but those days are long gone.

If such a way was created to Augusta,It would allow for an easier transfer of goods from Savannah-Augusta-Atlanta.Atlanta due to the presence of Hartsfield-Jackson's cargo operations would provide a valuable link by rail or trucks up I-20.

The way exists.. if it was a more economically feasible way of moving goods here other than rail and truck then we would see barges moving up and down the Savannah. There has not been significant barge traffic on the river for 100 years. The route takes twice as long than as a rail or highway route. Plus the port of Savannah has plenty of room to expand, there is ample room on the Jasper County side for port expansion, that would happen long before any consideration was given to diverting containers all the way to Augusta.

Grain, coal, concrete components and fertilizer are the primaries in the barge industry. It's cheaper to ship this way than in trucks.
