I have a job opportunity that would take me to Austin. Although I've read a lot of great things about Austin, I'm a little worried that I may be "out of my element" in terms of meeting women in my age group.

Are the pickings slim for me or am I needlessly worrying?

You would be in the second largest age group in Austin according to these demographics.

Age characteristics (2000)

Poplation under 5 years old: 46,715

Poplation 5 to 9 years old: 41,227

Poplation 10 to 14 years old: 37,108

Poplation 15 to 19 years old: 48,809

Poplation 20 to 24 years old: 82,945

Poplation 25 to 34 years old: 138,643

Poplation 35 to 44 years old: 104,874

Poplation 45 to 54 years old: 75,844

Poplation 55 to 59 years old: 21,440

Poplation 60 to 64 years old: 15,052

Poplation 65 to 74 years old: 23,008

Poplation 75 to 84 years old: 15,074

Population 85 years and older: 5,823

He might be in the 2nd largest age group, but how many of those are already married?

Most men date younger women anyway.

But really, is that your biggest concern is finding a lady friend? Just make some friend friends first and maybe the rest will fall into place.

I'm 33 and I find Austin to be a terrible place to meet men around my age. However, as I've previously mentioned, I'm also not a skinny tanning bed orange white chick, which appears to be what men around here prefer. Have at 'em!

Who would want to be with some creepy guy who prefers girls like that anyway? Guys in their 20's, I don't find creepy for that, but men 40 and older, yeah.

Smile You will love it!

You will love Austin. If you are employed, thats a great start for finding a woman. I am married, so noooo I am not a gold digger, but if I was looking.... employed would be a start. There is so much to do here, you will soon forget you are single. Good luck and enjoy the your new life in Austin.

Demographics aside, if adventure fits your personality curve then load up the car.

wazmoot,

I relocated to Austin in 2005 and that was the primary reason for my move. That said, I had hoped to meet someone while here. What I found was that Austin is a *great* place if you are younger, say under 30. The primary reason being of course that this is a college town. However, when you get much above that rough threshold, the availability decreases considerably; and then Austin isn't better than anywhere else really to meet a lady friend. Heck, I ended up marrying a woman from a different city! :-)

That said, Austin is a wonderful place to live in general. So I'd recommend what another poster suggested, which is to forget about that stuff and move here because you want to spend you life here, or at least some of it. You'll be happy you did.

Good luck whatever you decide.
