I start a new job Monday. Can anyone tell me how much time to allow for the commute? I am leaving from Bee Cave (Uplands subdivision) and need to get to St. David's hospital on 32nd St. Assume I should take Southwest Parkway instead of 71 all the way to avoid the Y.

Normally, I need to be at work at 7:00 am, but for my orientation week I need to be there at 8:30. If you can, please let me know about how much time to allow for both of those.

Thanks -
Meredith

I would never have thought of the route you suggested.

I would probably take Bee Caves Rd. to Mopac, go north, and exit at either Enfield or 35th.

For your normal shift Bee Caves traffic will be light that early.

I think OP probably has the right idea. St David's is right on I35 and 32nd, kind of far to cut through. SW Parkway to Mopac to 71 to 35N would be most "non-stop". 71 before/after SW Parkway moves pretty quick, but 35N would be a problem. So would Mopac, though, if you were taking Bee Caves to Mopac. Then you'd still have to spend all that time cutting across town to I35.

I'd say when leaving to arrive at 7:00AM, 30 minutes is probably sufficient. At 8:00-8:45, give yourself at least 45 mins.

I drive Mopac to Trinity via Enfield frequently and it is pretty quick.

I just think any time spent on IH35 in the city limits is unpleasant.

But try each route and see which one is best. Best may not be fastest.

There are a number of ways to go. I would probably try 71 to Mopac North, exit 35th going east.

Could also try Bee Cave road to Mopac north, exit 35th.

At 8-8:30 in the morning, I would allow 40 minutes.

When you're commuting to be there at 7:00 am, my guess is you could be there in 25-30 min.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think what I'll do is take Bee Caves to Mopac, then get off at either Enfield to Red River OR get off at 35th to 38th to Duval. Which of those exits off Mopac do you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

You have struck upon Austin's weakness when it comes to traffic, trying to go East to West or West to East near the CBD. It is absolutely horrible and should be the traffic planners shame after all of these years that they have not been able to do better then this.

I definitely would not go all the way north to 35th or 38th without trying a more southerly route.

Surface streets just North of the state capital are generally not too bad. Around the University, students avoid getting up too early, and prof's avoid early morning classes, so traffic is lighter. Most of the surface streets around the University are not through streets so don't bother trying to drive through there East to West, except on Dean Keeton, & MLK.

I would try the Enfield Exit off MoPac East on Enfield / 15th Street to Red River St. then North to St. David's; before I considered going much further North.

Best wishes, R

That's exactly what I did and it was fine. I was amazed - at 8:00, I was able to spend only 35 - 40 minutes. Enfield Road is what I did all week & it was not a problem on a single day. Now on Saturday morning when I did it, I took I-35 (at 6:00 am) and it was only 25 minutes. Which is fine with me!

I actually live by that hospital and work off beecaves and 360. I usually take 38th st that turns into 35th street and take mopac to bee caves. It takes me about 20min maybe 30 on a bad day. But, never over 30 min.

Since this is both my account and my husband's he wanted to add something...

maps.google.com

sorry if he sounds like a jerk.

I told him that those online maps don't always give you the best route because they don't really account for traffic.
