Never been.

I like it! The oyster tacos and coffee rubbed ribeye tacos are nice. A little pricey for Mexican, but not too much.

I also like this place. Try to go when there is live music. They've changed the menu since I've last been there, and I don't see the lamb sliders I liked..

Never been. Heard it's very good Italian. It's in kind of a rough neighborhood, though.

Very nice place. Can walk on the Ladybird Lake trail before/after.

Great steak house, but expensive. Check The Dealmap for on-line gift certificate -- I think we got $25 GC for $2 or something.

Never been -- but I run by their patio/deck all the time on Ladybird Lake.

Some of Austin's best food will be found in dives, you'll be missing out. If you get a wild hair try Hoffbrous steak house on 6th street, Dirty's hamburgers on Guadalupe, Hut's hamburgers on 6th, Thai Kitchen (used to be a dive but expanded), Naus pharmacy (hamburgers and fountain softdrinks), there are so many I couldn't list them here. But don't count them out because they're not homogeneous.

Long Drives?

I went to Austin in June, out of all the restaurants we went to. The best was the Salt Lick in Round Rock just north of Austin. The employees were very polite. We were not rushed - on a scale from 1 to 10, the night was a 10+.

We ate at two restaurants in the city near sixth street. I don't even remember the names (the food was not that good).

My observation - the restaurants in the city had the "get them in and get them out attitude". Compared with restruants just outside the city where not pushy.

On our last day stopped at a fast food restaurant south of Austin. Took my order - gave my a number and asked to please sit down. They brought out our drinks; then our burgers, then came out with a tray showing a selection of Salt, Pepper, Ketchup, Mustard. This was better service than $100 per meal restaurants here in New York. Just because the service was good, enjoyed my meal.

Yes Austin is a clean and beautiful city - there are so many places within 30 minutes driving distance to see.

Have Fun

I'd replace Garrido's with La Condesa and Andiamo with Vespaio. May want to try to squeeze in Perla's and Fonda San Miguel.

I'd say go with the old traditional Austin restaurants. Since ambiance appears to be of primary importance to you (I agree with a poster above that you're going to miss a lot of the best food by avoiding "dives"), if you want to get a real "Austin" experience, I'd recommend the following:

Chez Nous

Fonda San Miguel

Green Pastures

Hudsons on the Bend

Jeffrey's

Paggi House (sadly, kind of hidden behind a lot of newer construction now)

Ironworks - For BBQ - not the best, you have to drive for that, and you REALLY have to be willing to eat in a dive, but more than acceptable, and a bit fancier interior than most. If going to Salt Lick (http://www.saltlickbbq.com/locations_driftwood.html - broken link), go to the original in Driftwood - more ambiance than the Round Rock one.

In with TexasHorseLady - Chez Nous! If it's good enough for Mrs. Bush, it's good enough for me

I prefer Garridos to La Condesa, but I agree with the rest of the subs. Vespaio's setting is much more fun. Perla's is one of only a few options for good seafood in town (oysters especially). And Fonda San Miguel can't be beat if you can afford it (expensive!).

Honestly, I'd skip Hoffbrau and Hut's.

Hoffbrau is basically butter-fried steaks, nothing like what you'd expect (or want) in a steak house. It's from a different time, though, and if you wanted to experience what used to pass for a "steak house"... I guess it could be a reminder of those times.

Hut's is mostly hype IMO. They are probably the 4th or 5th best burger on my list, and their onion rings and fries are completely lackluster. Try Casino El Camino instead. Or Dirty's. Both are equally Austin-y IMO.

Sorry, atxcio, but the foodies that I know (who mostly don't hold with being politically correct) do, indeed, love Hoffbrau, even though it's not quite politic to admit that steak cooked in butter is very tasty.

Huts used to be awesome. Not as impressive any longer, I fear.

I've somehow managed to miss Casino El Camino, but, then, I pretty much gave up on Sixth Street when it turned into tourist city. Dirty's, on the other hand, is a must-go to get your true Austinite cred!
