When were you here? Bee Cave has gone from the quaint gateway to the hill country it once was to a Plano style endless stip mall with the traffic to boot.
Lakeway is still pretty well run and has endured through this massive overbuilding phase though. Its probably the best run suburb of Austin, the old people who run the town dont put up with any crap from developers or anyone for that matter.

I saw the transition from it being a gas station and a bait shop to what it is today.

No offense, but I don't think you've ever been to Plano if you think Bee Cave even compares to the traffic and strip malls. Bee Cave has grown a lot, of course, but it's nothing like Plano.

Anyway, to respond to the OP:

It looks like of the places people keep pointing the finger to go to for work, Austin is the best.
You have got to be kidding me. Austin is one of the worst "big cities" in Texas to find employment period, especially employment that is upwardly mobile. Only San Antonio and Corpus Christi are probably worse. Right now in Austin, you are competing with 200 other applicants for one crappy position that pays 30k a year at most.

Austin's job market was never that great to begin with, even before the recession. Like someone else said, there's tens of thousands of recent college grads chasing around the entry level positions.

When I graduated from A&M, damn near all of the career postings were from D/FW or Houston. There were only a handful of companies in Austin. I only know one or two people who moved to Austin after graduating and they took sales jobs.

Don't alot of Austin jobs infill with recent graduates that are willing to take lower pay? I've heard that the market there is actually pretty bad even if the unemployment rate is somewhat lower than other major Texas cities on average.

Actually it depends a lot on the industry you're referring to. Even 3 years ago the company I worked for literally could not hire enough software engineers fast enough. And for various reasons I won't get into here, one of the biggest issues we had was attracting higher end talent. They would get snatched up quickly. In the last three years things have stabilized of course and hiring has become easier with a larger pool of more qualified developers to choose from.

Problem is, Austin doesn't really have a lot of industry outside of IT. Not like DFW.

That's another point I should have made... Austin doesn't really have a wide variety of opportunities outside of the IT sector.
