To put it simply:

When it comes to anything involving home handywork, I am completely, utterly and ultimately useless.

I have an entertainment center that is required to be drilled into a stud, otherwise it will fall forward and kill anyone in its way. I can't even drill the damn thing into the studs...I now have 9 holes in the apartment wall, all in the area where the stud finder detected a stud, and the entertainment center is still sitting there, not installed. I can't even fully move into this place, I have so much stuff in boxes that needs to be put away in the entertainment center, and because neither me nor my wife have even remote skill in this stuff, we're living amongst stacks and stacks and stacks and stacks and stacks of boxes.

Are there any installers in Austin that won't charge me $900 to install 3 pieces of furniture? We're desperate and need this installed ASAP. The only place I saw online is CServ but they only do office furniture. In fact, I haven't found a single place that doesn't do anything but office furniture.

You should be able to get a handyman for around $30/hour. I dont have one so Ill focus on the self install. Using a stud finder is pretty straightforward. Is it electronic or magnetic? Studs are typically a set distance apart so you should be able to get a feel for where the studs are based on marking multiple studs. There may be some horizontal cross braces so you should check for studs at multiple heights. Use a light pencil or tape to mark the possible locations. I use a small nail (or smallest drillbit) that I tap into the wall before drilling to check for the stud.

Thanks for the feedback. The stud finder is electronic, and I found all the studs but oddly enough, the stud finder stopped detecting the studs above a certain height, which leaves me wondering just how the building was constructed.

Regardless, I ended up finding a good set of wall anchors. The beauty of wall anchors is not needing to find the stud of course . Everything is now safely installed. Thanks again for the help!
