Thinking about driving down to Austin on a Friday evening from Dallas. We have never been there before so looking for some advice on must see/do things in the area? We love the outdoors, beautiful scenery, dining out (mexican, barbecue, etc), hiking, art, etc. Can anyone recommend something along these lines? Thanks in advance.

There are some good threads within the Austin forum with tons of stuff to do if you give it a search.

The quick list: Go to the Oasis (maybe just for drinks/live music), go to Mount Bonnell for a quick scenic stop, check out Zilker Park and some of the Ladybird lake trail (rent or bring a canoe, kayak, or mountain bike). Might also check out the Barton Creek Greenbelt (esp if you like hiking or mountain biking), Barton Springs Pool, SoCo (for good places to eat and some art), and downtown for music. Maybe East Austin for more art, that's where all the up and coming places are. Might also try the Hula Hut for mexican food on Lake Austin, or Ski Shores Cafe for burgers on the lake.

Hamilton Pool is really nice also. You could also go out to the Salt Lick for BBQ, or stop at some of the wineries around there.

Depending on when you come, there might be a good festival to check out.
