I wonder about people who were already away for the day before who left their pets in crates. I understand that people have not been able to return to their homes to take care of them. Anyone know if animal groups are helping? What about people who are evacuating, are they able to take pets with them to shelters?

Rescue groups are taking animals in from the evacuated Bastrop shelter, but that's a good question about animals that were inside homes (and even in yards) while owners were away. I suspect some perished, unless a good neighbor was able to intervene.

I think you could pose the question to Austin Pets Alive about attempts to rescue animals left behind, and whether they are providing temporary homes for pets of people in shelters. We were at APA last night. It was a very busy place, but I've noticed some responses to the public's questions on their Facebook page.

APA! was able to take the animals who were already in the Bastrop shelter. If you have a lost pet in the Bastrop fire area, call the Sheriff's office. To the best of my knowledge lost/stray pets from the Steiner area are being taken to TLAC, call 311.

Pets are welcome at all the Red Cross shelters, I think.
